Hi all,

I am looking at buying a used bike. I am going to see one tomorrow and ideally, if I like it I would want to buy it and ride it away.

As I don't know if I will definitely buy it, I would like to get something like MCN;s free 7 day insurance so I can insure it before I go to see it and drive it away. If I don't buy, I won't have lost anything.

Unfortunately the bike isn't advertised on MCN so does anyone know anywhere else that offers this type of service ?

So you're looking for free insurance? Laughing

Yeah... Let me know if you find somewhere mate, I'd happily take out a policy.

People pay a premium to advertise on MCN, hence they can offer free insurance using their revenue from that business. You aren't going to find anyone offering that for free, are you?

No. Pay up, bitch Thumbs Up

I'll just say that I took out a PAYG policy with evan insurance. It has proven impossible to cancell via their website, their email system is set up to make is as hard as possible to send someone a message and again goes through their website and you can only contact them verbally via a premium rate phone line at £1.05/min.

I landed up sending out a cancellation by post. They have acknowleged receiving my letter but have persisted in sending out cover notes every month. I also cancelled the payments directly but I have a feeling I have not heard the last of this.

I mention this because this company also offers ebike insurance.

One option, OP, is to get quotations now, with the start date as tomorrow.

Find the best price and everything as normal and then if you like the bike, pull the trigger and take out the policy. You can usually get them to start the policy FROM NOW (whatever time), so it shouldn't be an issue.

You're gonna need a policy anyway, right?

Alternatively, pay the seller a deposit and pick up the next day?

Lots of options mate, you aren't the first person to be in this situation Wink

Thanks for the replies. I know you can get this type of 7 day insurance for cars etc hence was wondering if anyone else did it. What the insurer gets out of it is a qualified lead/potential customer that may take the full 12 month policy.

It's not as mad as you are making it sound.

First Direct used (they may even still do it) to let you cancel any car insurance policy, for free, up to 14 days after you took it out, as long as you hadn't made any claims. Uniquely, they didn't charge a cancellation fee so it was completely free in the end.

Flexrider insurance cannot help you.
From the site
Flexrider Insurance wrote:
Short Term Motorbike Insurance

Unfortunately with effect from 30th April 2012 we will no longer be able to offer temporary insurance on motorbikes or scooters.

For the last 3 years we have been the only company in the market providing this cover, initially underwritten by Chaucer and latterly by Catlin. Both companies have decided to pull out of this sector of the market, and despite our best efforts we have not been able to find a replacement underwriter.

As a biker myself I fully understand the convenience our Flexirider cover provided – I used it myself several times to ride mate’s bikes! – but we just haven’t been able to find an alternative insurer. We’ll keep trying, so please continue to keep an eye on our site and hopefully you’ll eventually see some better news!

Thank you very much for your previous custom

Nearest I've found is the monthly eBike premium or TheBikeInsurer PayAsYouGo insurance. Both may have the hassle as explained above by Stinkwheel as TheBikeInsurer makes great play on the fact it is online only.

Except said button was always broken when I tried to do it (forwarded you to a blank page with a Javascript error, tried using three different browsers through two different operating systems at three different locations over a period of several days). Leaving me with the option of calling their premium rate phone line or writing.

I can almost garauntee they will try to bill me at the end of the 12 months or somehow chase me for the money, I can feel it in my bones. The letter I sent them is entirely unambiguous though and they have acknowledged its receipt even if they haven't acted on it.

I thought you could get a refund before 14 days with any insurer these days? Either way, you could buy a full policy and just cancel it as soon as you need to... say the bike was not what you expected and had to be returned to the seller etc. should imagine that'd take care of the cancellation fees if they try to charge you. I got Bennetts to waive the fees once by saying I was going to come back to them anyway when I got my new bike Shifty

would have worked out more expensive for the whole year obviously.. but it was £20-30 a month for a cbr600f and suited my needs fine.

They still charge you an 'administration fee'. Ballpark £25 plus can include part of premium for days used.

Good luck with that. Insurance companies/brokers are not your friend. They will not do you and favours. See answer above.

Must have been an off day. Not usually helpful like that. See first answer above.

The distinction is between "setup" and "cancellation" charges.

Within 14 days, the most that they're allowed to charge by statute is the reasonable cost of setting up the policy, plus a pro-rata daily rate for the amount of cover from which you benefited. If they're doing everything electronically, I'd imagine that the actual cost is pennies, but £25 isn't massively unreasonable.

Do watch out though, some insurers quite openly in the small print quote "cancellation" fees within 14 days. I assume that they're going on the basis that we can contractually agree to waive our statutory rights. Or, they just don't care.

After 14 days, all bets are off, and they could refund you £0 on the cover and slap you with any cancellation fee that hey want. It'd then come down to whether the contract itself was unreasonable.

Thanks for all the replies.

I have now decided to take a different approach.

I have taken a few quotes for a 12 month policy and selected the one that best suits me. I am armed with all the details and will just phone them up when I have bought the bike to start the cover and then drive it away.

have you not got any mates with a riders policy on their insurance? they could ride it home for you, and be covered third party only (aslong as the motorcycle isnt owned by them and is insured by somebody else).

ive done this whilst buying cars before, you just got to make sure the seller is still insured on the bike beforehand
