 |
|
I have an HJC Emblem and the wind-noise is bloody awful.
I have tried my MRA Vario in every position but at any setting the wind-noise becomes unbearable at 50+ MPH. Now, the last lid I bought was back in '81 and I used it for many years without problem with noise but this new lid means ear-plugs are necessary on any ride over 30 miles.
I have tried with vents open and closed (my '81 lid didn't have ventilation ports).
Is this a 'feature' of HJC or modern lids generally? ____________________ 22PlusY

Noise is fixed by wearing earplugs. There isn't a crash helmet made that I'm aware of that doesn't require ear protection to avoid hearing damage.
Did anyone try those earplug s I left at the BBQ? Those are the ones I use and i haven't found anythig better yet.
Now to answer your question - no, it's not a feature of all HJC helmets, I've had five CS-12's and they were about the quietest lid I've tried. Now I have a CS-14 (coz I can't get the cs-12 any more) and it's a good bit noisier and has a nasty whistle if you have the visor open a little.
Worst I ever tried was a Shoei - can't remember the model, but it was truly dreadful for noise. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

The noise comes from the hole in the helmet you put your head through.
If you seal this up you reduce the noise by about 80%.
Modern lids are far better at noise reduction as it is now accepted that noise at speed causes hearing damage. (Though a lot of people are deaf to the advice)
I have 'the quiestest' helmet on the market (They claim) Shuberth C3. Pile of shite if I am honest. It is not noticably quiter than my Shoei was and just as noisey as my Arai.
Earplugs are the simplest way to reduce noise.
Fitting a massooof screen works but is tres gay.
Tobinators, variators and cetera are also muchness of Gehy.... ____________________ W-ireless A-rtificial L-ifeform L-imited to O-bservation P-eacekeeping and E-fficient R-epair |

do earphones have any effect? or would you still get hearing damage without ear plugs? ____________________ CBT - 17/09/12 * Theory - 23/10/12 * Mod1 - 05/03/13 * Mod2 - 25/03/13 * BOSH!

I have the C3 too; it is also not particularly quiet. As others mentioned, a lot depends on the seal around the neck. My C3 isn't too bad when the adjustable chin flap thing is positioned just right, but if I wear a balaclava or neck tube, it's very noisy again.
At 60+ mph, especially on the motorway, there's a huge racket from all the tyres against the road in any case. ____________________ Bikes: S1000R, SH350; Exes: Vity 125, PS125, YBR125, ER6f, VFR800, Brutale 920, CB600F, SH300x4

My Shark Evoline 2 is quiet enough to wear riding on the motorway over long distances without any ear protection. Did London to Cheltenham the other day along M25, M40 and then up the A40 without any ear protection and had no problems at all.
Only problem is that if you don't have a Shark shaped-head it can be a very very painful thing to wear. ____________________ Ride a slightly battered Fazer

Buy some silicone putty off of eBay, mould them into custom plugs, job done.

Does a man call anything that is a 'skirt'? |
Call it a "helmet kilt" then, they still work really well. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Thanks for the responses. It seems this is the norm. The odd thing about my 1981 Bell was that I can't recall noise ever being a problem.
I do have earplugs and use them for anything over a short ride but am looking to get a Scala and don't know if I will still hear anything from it if I have earplugs. ____________________ 22PlusY

I have an MRA Vario and cannot find a decent position for it. I thought I had it nailed but realistically it is not.
things do get quieter if I raise up slightly so I understand the screen has an effect. Maybe I should try removing the screen and seeing how quiet the lid is then.
I'm considering going for the MRA touring screen as it is higher but it would be nice to see one up-close before spending more dosh. The MRA was on the bike when I bought it and the original screen was not supplied.
Back in the 80's I was riding naked bikes, maybe that was the reason it was quieter?
I have also removed the chin-curtain, though this made no difference to the noise when it was fitted but it was just a cosmic pain in the arse. ____________________ 22PlusY

I took a BMW K1300GT out for a demo. I hated the screen. It was sooooo noisy behind it. Dreadfully noisy for a 'Cadilac' of Eurotouros.
I mentioned to the sales when I got back. I was informed they come with a longer screen (but I wasnot told how much longer.) so I opted for the longer screen on my new bike. I got the option free as they were at the end of production specials so they took pity on me.
When I got the new bike the first thing I noticed was the noise behind the screen The screen is electric up and down so I adjusted to max up. Still not perfect but better. I just stepped of a R1200GS which I'd fitted a big screen to so was more protected by 'my' screen than the extra extended BMW factory option.
I have considered the Touratech flappy thing but again I would not like to pay £90 for something that do nothing.
I was out on a Ducati 749 years ago and was put off by the lack of wind protection. I did find if you kept you chin on the tank it was not too bad though..
Best defence is custom-mould earplugs. The DIY ones are OK but they are far far from the perfect ones that you get from the blokes who do the £50 jobbies at bike shows. ____________________ W-ireless A-rtificial L-ifeform L-imited to O-bservation P-eacekeeping and E-fficient R-epair |

I've got to be honest I've never had a problem with wind noise in my Shoei XR-1100.. but then again I top out at about 60mph.
