Passed my test on Monday as previously announced YAY!

L Plates are now off, however the wife has just started riding and is using the 125 as well, albeit briefly as not commuting like I am, just as well she works in centre of London. Mainly at weekend though.

Question is, can I legally ride the bike with L Plates. In a car I believe this is an issue, but not sure.

If I get another bike, which I may, the CBF125 is super efficient on fuel and is great for all weather riding and South London commute being so skinny.

The rear one is actually easy as it has nylon nut and bolt on the base of the number plate. The front one is an issue as it sits on the fork.

Any suggestions on easy off for the front?

Use black electricians tape and cross out the L. Take it off when she wants to ride.

My problem with that kind of 'bodge' is that is likely to get you pulled, just out of curiousity from Mr Plod.

It is not an offence to drive/ride with L plates.

The advice in the highway code is to remove (or I think you can obscure, e.g. gaffer tape over on a diagonal). However, as said not an offence to keep them on. The highway code says you SHOULD remove them. If it said you MUST remove then that would mean it's the law and the appropriate statute would be quoted (it's not!). The MUST only refers to the law and display by learner driver.

Plates should be removed or covered when not being driven by a learner (except on driving school vehicles).

I know this because I looked it up as sometimes borrow daughter's Vespa.

Risk getting pulled anyhow if traffic plod doesn't like the cut of your jib, or he got out of bed on the wrong side, or his blow up sex toy is flat, etc, etc.

Why would it matter? I always took my brother pillion with L plates attached to his moped and never got pulled, even when sitting in front of police Laughing

Impressed you've not been pulled for that! Mind you, amount of times I see 'kids' razzing around on 50's with a baked bean tin for an exhaust and two up, trying to do the right thing suddenly seems not quite as important!

This has happened because I took my wife out 'pilly' last night, she was keener than I was, got going and it was easy. In fact made me a better rider as I was keeping safer distances and extra care on braking etc. She got off with a big beaming smile and said "Get a bigger bike!". Apparently this was too slow and labouring, I then had to explain that I was keeping it in a higher gear than normal to make it not so snatchy on throttle. I hadn't done it before and it would seem I was more scared than she was!

Hahaa this is one of those "luxury" worries people who have passed their tests give themselves just to wind up those of us who have yet to pass. Smile

As for obscuring the L plate, I wouldent bother as you could run the risk of plod pulling you over to ask why your not properly displaying an L Plate.

It wasn't meant to sound smug at all, many have and are working hard towards this and I'd offer help for anyone.

Anyone doing their test at Mitcham (which IMO has to be the easiest MOD 1 track), I would happily spend an hour or two with someone in a car park with my cones I bought (silly little flat ones that they use for football). I am 5 minutes away from Mitcham.

So much help is offered here for free and from those who really have no reason to other than their passion, and offering to impart their knowledge experience onto others. It's what forums/community's are all about.

Every self respecting bloke knows better than to disagree with his better half!!!! Two's up on a 125 is going to be slow and laboured because it's only a pokey little engine, 250's are bearable (although having toured two's up on one before a little uncomfortable), but your best bet is to get a 500/600 which'll be better able to cope, more fun and not too large to be a beast.
Do what she says before she beats you to it! Very Happy

I've been looking at various 500/600's, found a Nice Honda CB500S near me for not much money. Yamaha dealer near me wants me to go and try out their XJ6

Sports bikes are out, aside from the fact they are not me, something for the two of us when the mood takes us would be the winner. Also I'd still be commuting on it.

I have no idea why anybody would want to take a passanger on a bike. Never mind the size of the bike having a passanger is just a pain. Might as well get a car :-/

I've got a really nice car with all the toys, will manage banning speeds and beyond with ease. It's comfortable and I can drive it anywhere easily.

BUT where is the fun in that, when you can be two up on a bike, getting attacked by the elements. That and living near London means I can't get anywhere in a reasonable time in a car (let alone a hurry), also for much cheapness, cars don't like sitting in traffic.

Incidentally, myself and my wife openly admit we are total hypocrites! 3-4 months ago, bikers annoyed us, we didn't see the point etc. etc.

Now we understand and totally get it!

Because it's so much more fun.
If I want to go someplace and take someone with me, it's a lot more fun to go on the bike than in the car, for the same reason it's more fun to go on the bike alone than go in a car alone.

It's not a pain if you explain what you need to explain to them to begin with (sit still, lean, etc)... and get yourself a "Bitch fell off" T-shirt just in case Laughing
