Just wondering if anyone has been on the speed awareness course?
I got on this Monday for doing 35 in a 30 and was just wondering what to expect.
Is it all finger pointing and someone telling me I could of killed someone and that he thinks he is the road "god".
Or is it more relaxed?
Cheers

Did you not get to choose your time? I'm doing mine in Sussex and it gave me the option to book the date. I'm rather hoping I can turn up, sign up and disappear during a toilet break, I know this is wishful thinking though.

I did one in January and it was actually a decent course. No finger pointing as such but they do touch on key aspects of road craft. The scariest thing about my class was that I was the only motorcyclist in the room, no-one else knew of the two second rule and when it came to simple aspects such as road signs there was only myself giving the correct answers.

Been having a read online and it seems like good course, a lot of people have said it is mostly full of 16 yr old moped boys.
Debating weather to go all out in leathers or just the textile bottoms and jacket.

Inb4 paying for course, not completing it, and receiving FPN.

I've had to do it before, caught doing 58 in a 50 on a pizza moped.

Basically it's slightly patronising, some of the stuff I knew already, some I didn't, there's a lot of presentations and pop-quiz style interaction (with a little remote control thingy you get given to press ABCDE on and stuff) but at the end of the day it's not too bad and beats 3 point any day.

Oh, and Maccydee don't even bother trying to sneak out before the end, they take note of who's there at the start and will report you back to CPS as failing to complete the course if you're not there at the end.

I've done it. Was okay. The guy was smug... the woman was quite humourous. Most of the people there were piss poor at knowing the highway code on road markings and traffic signs, which was worrying.

Done it too, to be honest it was pretty good, though I think the instructor has the most to do with that, I had a cool German guy.

I was the only biker and one of the only ones who knew almost all of the right answers. Honestly in a room of twenty something people only two of us knew the national speed limit. A few people thought the limit on motorways was 40mph!

I did one a few years ago for 37 in a 30. The course I did was run by a private company called Drivetech, now part of the AA.

My session was packed. There must have been around 50 of us squeezed into a pretty small room. Good cross-section of society from kids to retirees. Most folk seemed to take it fairly well, but there was one fat, inbred, recidivist woman who spent the morning complaining about how she was innocent, then in same breath say that she would drive how she liked and we could all get fucked.

I didn’t find the course patronising. While they spent time discussing speed, the laws regarding speed and the contribution of speed in the severity of accidents, most of the course was about observation and reading the road.

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised.

On the letter you receive after being caught it says speed awareness available between 36-41 in a 30mph zone. Would the OP still be entitled to attend?

I wish I was offered a course Laughing 65 in a 50 and 107 in a 70 kinda swayed them to give me points Thumbs Down Laughing

I'd quite happily accept on of them over points, no need to declare anything etc, but running quotes gave me cheaper premiums with 3 points, now cheaper with 6 Confused It is the only reason I can afford to drive my Golf. Laughing

The 'qualifying' threshold for SAC is the 'low speed' ones I think posted limit plus a small margin over the numbers I posted there. It is up to the local police and judicial parties what the want to offer.
The whole idea is to control overspeeding by education rather than punishment. They say the those who do the SAC will not re-offend as often as those who just do the FPN.

But, with respect, in answer to the question, 35mph is 1mph over the 30+3+1 so it Is speeding but not bad enough for only courts to deal with.

I think it is a good idea for folk to learn how their speed affects their driving but a bigger concern for me would be the arseholes who simply cannot drive.
A car is a mechanical device which needs careful control. If you look at insurance garages you see why insurance is so high because of idiots who should not be permitted to operate machinery. Not just women BTW Smile

I did one of these course and was amazed at peoples perception of danger most believing motorways were the most dangerous types of roads.

I had a HGV driver on my course that came very close to getting thrown out as he keep disagreeing with the AA man Laughing

It's entirely up to the local Farce. You could be prosecuted and convicted for 31 in a 30, it's all guidelines and discretion.

I quite fancy doing one, if only to look a parasite in the eye and say "Tell me that you never, ever exceed the speed limit." Wink

My Dad just did one instead of getting points, said he actually found it really interesting - real mix of people doing it, too, from managing directors to white van men.

3 points made less difference to my dads insurance than the price of the course and the cost of getting there. Perk of being old I suppose!

Everybody speeds... It's just the 'wakners' who actually get caught doing it. Embarassed

I did one a year or so ago, I think they vary depending what area you are in?

I was camera'd on the A41 in Birkenhead doing 36 in a 30 and had to do a full day course in Knowsley.

I too was the only biker in the group, and was quite appalled at some of the others lack of knowledge of speed limits and road signs and markings.

We did a morning session going through that sort of stuff, then in the afternoon I had to do an observed drive around Knowsley in a Corsa giving the course leader a running commentary on hazards and speed limits! That bit was quite good fun, the morning stuff was a bit boring. The course leader did comment after the drive that he could tell I rode a bike as my observations were spot-on and I was picking up way more than most of the other people he went out with - apparently only bikers look into the stopped traffic when going across a crossroads on a green light cos car drivers don't realise that someone could be screeching across whilst running a red light.........

Me too when I did mine a few weeks ago! Got done doing 36 in a 30 zone at 3 in the morning, and they say things like "If you hit a little kiddie at 35 you'll kill them"
If little kids are wandering the streets at 3 in the morning I'd want social services to be giving their parents a fucking good bollocking instead!
