Depends on your age.

If you are under 18 then you need a second-hand Motocross Helmet, nylon track suit, trainers, and absolutely NO gloves.

If you are over 18 then you need some comfortable leather shoes, a shopping bag, and a purse.

I'd suggest posting in the "New Bikers" section. Thumbs Up Very Happy

Also, reading the stickies in there, and doing a quick search for people who have asked similar things before. The search function is your friend. If you still have questions after that, post away!

If you have a car licence, you merely need the CBT and from then on you need not have L plates.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

If you have a full car licence it depends when you got it.

If it was before 1st feb 2001 you don't even need a CBT, and you can ride with no L plates.

If you have a full car licence issued after then you need to do a CBT, then you can ride indefinitely with no L plates. That particular CBT will remain valid for the life of your full moped licence.

However it is well worth doing the CBT regardless and getting something bigger, as Mopeds are too slow. Some may argue dangerously slow in fact.

It's true... You don't 'NEED' L plates but they'll help to keep you out of jail if you don't have the licence. Part A or B or what evea you need to do.

OP
FORGET MOPED.....
It will only do 30MPH.

Pass test and get your arse on a 125 for a while. They can easily keep up with trucks on the m/way.... Smile

Moped would be fine if you only skite through town though.

He's 28, so it'll be possible he has a pre 2001 licence sym, but only barely.

The pre 2001 rules only apply to a 50cc moped, if the OP wants a 125cc moped then he would have to do a CBT test anyway.

You can buy a second hand bike and the gear (gloves, jacket, helmet, trousers) on ebay.

My driving license which is pre 2001 says I have a (p) class which is max 50cc with no L's and no CBT needed

If you just want to jump on something small that does push bike speed then this might meet your needs.
Anything more and it's CBT time

If it's over 50cc then it's not a "moped", it's a scooter.

Really, don't bother with 50s, they're for kids who can't ride anything bigger.

Spend £120 or so on a CBT, then get yourself a 125. Money well spent.

OP specifically said moped, so if he passed his car test before 1 February 2001 all he needs to do from a licensing point of view is buy one and ride it.

You need to get CBT then prepare 100 pounds deposit go to a Honda dealer and get PS125 or SH125 - it is way better then any 125 motorcycle, you do not want to shift gears in town.

It has plenty of power for 125 about 14hp more importantly the power is smooth and progressive, contrary to previous posts here it is fine till 65mph.

The brakes are linked CBS brakes way better then any other moped or 125 bike, cannot stress how inportant are the brakes usually cars have better brakes and on motorcycle the brakes are the only think preventing you from smashing yourself in something very hard and your body is very soft beleive me it will hurt. Honda linked brakes are almost as good as having ABS.

Finally the riding position is high and you see better and are seen better. The seat is very comfortable I can say that from experience - I do daily 80 miles commute on it Smile

Get proper gear - full helmet and good protective textile jacket and trousers, proper boots, gloves, the tarmac hurts the same way if you ride R1 or scooter, if you value your limbs do it right.

The dealer will install L plates and will pay the tax and road fund, you just get your new bike and engoy the ride.

Given the fact that Honda dealers have good deals like 0% APR do not bother with second hand and avoid all Chinese stuff.

Finally last advice - easy on the trottle when wet or rains and also do not ride the bike below 0 degrees, ice on road is a killer, get dirt training course before you try any winter riding.

Happy riding!

Do the cbt and get a 125cc scooter, this will do about 55mph, 100mpg and be very cheap to run. I started with a Yamaha Vity and totally recommend that bike.
As far as riding gear goes you'll need a helmet, motorcycle gloves, jacket and overtrousers this time of year. handlebar muffs are also highly recommended.
budget for about two grand in total.
