Just a couple of minor things I need help with

Hi guys, just a couple of things I'd like some help on if anyone knows anything...

Bike: YBR Custom, 2010

1) My back brake has started squeaking. Only started in the last few days, bike has been kept outside and ridden along quite muddy roads the last couple of weeks - could this be part of the problem or are there other factors which could contribute?

2) Clock bulbs - the rev counter one had gone when I bought the bike, but now the speedo one has gone so that's a bit annoying. I've tried looking for 'ybr clock bulbs' etc. but no luck - I'm guessing they're a common bulb for which people wouldn't feel inclined to write all it's uses, any idea what bulbs I need to get?!

Brake could be almost anything, contamination, glazing, or plain worn out; only way to know for sure is take apart and check.

Instrument bulbs are typically 2w bayonet fitting, which normally translates to a serial number of 281 and can be bought in any car accessory shop, like Halfords.

No probs.

Actually, my XJ rear drum squeals a bit if I don't use it for a few days, but it lives outside, so it takes a few good prods to wear off the corrosion that's developed.

If the noise goes away with use and there's plenty of adjustment left, I wouldn't worry about it.

I thought that could be a possibility as on my ride home last night it started off quite squeaky but by the end of the journey was much less so, and only really when I gave it a good stomp. I'll have to have a look at it as there is a chance I've sold it so I don't want to give them any reasons to come back crying.

For the bulb just pull out the rubber clamp that goes into the clocks, take the bulb out and take it into the shop (car accessory or halfords) say I'm after one of these and your sorted. Had to get one myself recently as the clocks lights had gone replaced it for 10p.

Regarding the back brake I've got a similar problem but the brakes work fine no brake dust in them (drum brakes). So I've just left it gives that extra warning to motorists on the roads.

Drum brakes squeal when there is a build up of brake dust from the shoes wearing. Worth pulling the drum apart and use a damp cloth to wipe the dust out. Grease any spindles whilst you are at it. Takes a few minutes once the wheel is off.

So I just discovered that Yamaha have a very handy parts catalogue on their website. It seems that the clocks have some different types of bulbs inside - six 12V-3W, and two 12V-1.7W. I can't imagine they will have all gone, would one going mean the rest wouldn't work?

They're only cheap things like but all adds up if I have to buy seven!

Looking at that part diagram, there's 8 bulbs on those instruments:

5x 3w idiot lamps (oil, high beam, neutral, indicators)

1x 1.7w fuel gauge

2x 1.7w instrument illumination

The instrument bulbs are a T10 fitting (the fuel gauge bulb is smaller) which carries a generic part number of 517.

So, all you need are 2x 517 bulbs, shouldn't be more than a quid each and should be a lot less.
