Whenever I go for a ride and fancy a walk about, say at the coast or whatever, instead of walking about with a helmet in my hand, how about chaining it to the front wheel with a waterproof helmet bag over it? That way it's off the floor, and wont get wet if it started raining.

Obviously chavs could piss about with it, or someone could accidentally kick it, but for starters it's only a cheap helmet, and secondly I'd only do it in 'good' areas where there are lots of people walking about and for a short time only.

Are there any more 'risks' I have missed? And does anyone do this?

Do you not have a helmet lock on your bike?

Mine is under the pillion seat.

I have a thick, stiff wire bicycle lock that I leave coiled on the pillion handles (it coils by itself, it's actually difficult to UNcoil it). It's only about 1-2 feet in length. I use it to lock the helmet to the bike and to hold one of those packaway rucksacks in case I am ever out on the bike and want to buy something/carry something.

I just loop my chain around the back wheel, then bring both chain ends up and over the seat and connect the chain through the chin part of the helmet (then padlock together), so both helmet and wheel are locked together, and the helmet is held by the chain on to the seat. Works great.

Dogs can piss on it if you leave it on the floor (although I still sometimes take the risk)

I use the helmet lock on the side of my bike to hang my helmet on when I need to leave the bike.

I can promise you that I've left it in far far dodgier places than you're likely to leave yours and so far I've never had a problem - been doing it for about 3 years.

Only minor thing is that I always make sure I have something to go around my neck if there's any chance of rain because the lower edge sometimes gets damp in heavy rain but that's it. I don't have a waterproof bag or anything.

as others said, helmet lock. If not just a cheap cable lock round something on the bike that cant be undone and leave it on the seat. If it falls off then it wont hit the floor and you wont get bugs and shit in it Thumbs Up

If you cant figure out what to do with your helmet, then you should not have access to motorised vehicles. Shocked

If you have an open face lid, you can put it on the front mudguard.

I usually carry it with me but if we're out for most of the day, i.e the beach, then i use a lockable bike cable and lock it up to my seat.

Does that apply to females as well?
Oh! the other sort of helmet Cool

On topic keep it off the floor by whatever means. If as said you can keep it on the seat with the lock/chain it makes the chain slightly more secure (unable to be put oin the ground for breaking).

You can get something like an expanding metal net bag that you could use to help secure. I think they do something similar for rucksacs for backpackers. IIRC not that cheap so you have to use your own judgement as to value/worth. Found example - click here.

Guess that might work with a flip-front as well.

Thumbs Up

Same, but mine sits in the space under the seat.

Lock the helmet to the rear grab rail and sit it on the seat. I've looped it through the arm of my jacket before and left that on the seat too so I could wander round Brighton.

I just connect the strap thru the pillion handle and stick a padlock thru the metal hoop to the handle so nobody can steal it, seems to work

My bike has that too. It's a ridiculously short metal wire with a hook on either end.
I am guessing this goes around the D-lock of a helmet, but I've never had d-locks, just the normal clippety-type-thing, so they are useless for me.

improvise a little, I have a D ring lock on the side of the bike.. but I have ratchet straps too... but you can improvise a little hole for them to go through between the strap adjuster... might not be as secure as a metal ring but it does the job Smile

I've thought of passing it through that very hole you are showing in your pic. But didn't work. The metal wire under the seat is way too short, and the hole in the strap is way too close to the body of the helmet, so it doesn't work.
Besides, the other end of that strap is not attached to the helmet, it's just loose after the adjuster, so anyone could take it off the adjuster, out of the clip and out of the helmet holder, and off the helmet goes.

I never use the helmet lock after one of my lids was nicked by cutting the strap.

When we are off the bike for a long time me and the missus lock ours to the seat using a normal coiled bike lock. We also leave our jackets on the bike too, never had an issue Thumbs Up

If I leave mine I like to lock and chain it to the bars so it sits over the ignition, makes it harder for anyone to interfere with ignition perhaps but mainly avoids a risk of dog peeing in it or something.

I think to myself would I leave £200, £300 or £400 there in plain view and only secure it with a crappy bit of cable or cheap cycle lock?

If I wouldn't I take my lid with me, if you insist on leaving your lid there keep it off the floor and in a bag / covered up and locked up as best you can.

If someone is going to go through the hassle of that to steal the helmet, chances are they will find a way of getting the helmet off the "wire" mentioned... by cutting it or what-not....

if they are really determined, they will just cut the straps instead... not like they would care about buckling it up if they're that willing to steal a helmet in the first place huh?

You can't stop someone cutting the straps (or understand why the hell they'd do that, for that matter), but what I am describing, perhaps not too clearly, is a 10-second way of undoing the helmet from the holder wire and getting it out clean with the strap intact.

When it comes down to it, if I've locked it in a way that I've done all I can and the only way it can get nicked is if the helmet, strap or holder is damaged/broken, that's OK, but if I've "locked" it in a way that just undoing the strap intact can get it free, then there's no point.

What are these helmet locks people speak of? I've got some hooks under the rear seat but you can't lock the helmet to them; I thought they were bungie straps.

Oh I understood what you meant, Guess I took a bad example Razz

Guess its a bit more noticeable how easy it is to undo when its hanging from a wire... mine's is just a little lock on the side which is awkward to get your hands into, never mind notice its not held on by much...

Something similar to this
