Ok, I think I know what you mean.
If theres definately fuel in the float bowl, and the engine runs briefly if you pour some petrol into the carb down the airbox tube (interesting technique btw!), I can only logically conclude (and probably completely wrongly), that the problem is somewhere between the two. So needles?

Oh. Another thing.
If it fires up, strenuously resist the temptation to touch the throttle or it'll die immediately. If they've been sat a long time, they usually fire up on one cylinder, the other three kick in one at a time. If you open the throttle before it's running on all four, it'll cut out.
Only once all four are firing on full choke and the revs have risen to 2,500-3,000rpm should you start to give it some throttle. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”
