Went through a flood on Wednesday the water came up and soaked my socks and boots. Was speaking with my uncle and apparently he used to use a carrier bag around his feet to keep his socks dry (learnt it in the army apparently).

Just wondering if anyone on here has ever tried it for riding and if it has worked.

There are all sorts of tricks involving bags, another useful one for when riding long distance in shitty weather is to make head and arm holes in a bin liner and put it on under your jacket, keeps the chill off a bit better. Particularly if you've got an ancient and temperamental set of textiles that like to randomly let in what feels like a torrent of water every so often, just to make sure you're awake Confused

Also my standard weather-protection for festivals.
A folded bin bag doesn't take much space in a pocket - can also be laid out for sitting on muddy ground.
'Back in the day' before I had all the bike kit I saw it was probably going to rain so stuck some bin bags in - it did start to rain as I was leaving (uni open day); got some confused looks as I was taping bin bags to my legs in the carpark!

Putting carrier bags over your feet works well in terms of keeping out the water let in by your boots, but it can make you sweat like a paedo at a kid's disco, which kinda negates the point of it all.

I got soaked on the way to work once. On the way home I put a large bag round each leg, taped it round boots and legs to keep in place.

Lasted about 2 miles, but that was fine, distance to bike shop. I spent a silly amount on goood textiles one of which didnt fit me and is for sale quite cheap Sad

I've seen guys on the motorway with their hands inside carrier bags to stop their gloves getting soaked through. Of course muffs are far better.

Personally, I'm very happy with my goretex boots Thumbs Up

Used to cut up plaggy bags and line my shoes with them when I was a kid because they had a hole in the sole when me mam didn't have much money to buy me new shoes.

Since breaking a big toe and then the associated ingrowing toe nail since its started growing back -yes

It means I can get my foot into the boot without the sock sticking to the lining and putting enough pressure on it to make me breathless for a few minutes

It also has the added advantage that I can take both feet out without the lining coming out still firnmly attached to my socks - great boots and waterproof without the bag method- just the annoying habit of the lining inverting when feet removed

Not sure if my liners are the waterproof bit so reticent to cut slits and glue them in properly- bag method will stay for shorter journeys/commuting

Regards
Rob

Time to get better boots imo, my Daytonas had no issues keeping my feet bone dry through an hour long ride in that big downpour we had on Thursday. That includes having to put my feet down whilst fording since car drivers seem to assume they have right of way in my lane Neutral

For the same effect
Basic - carrier bags Cost nothing look a bit silly
Better - Over-boots (£5 from Lidl)and over-mitts (£10 from Oxford)
Best - top quality boots - £2-300 from all the usual suspects

You can pick up a pair of Daytona Roadstar/travelstars from ebay for less than £80 with a little patience, they are easily durable enough to be a pretty safe purchase. Only thing that matches that for value/ruggedness would be a pair of surplus goretex army boots but then you don't get the ankle protection.

I went through a flooded area the other morning at aboout 20mph. I hadn't seen it because of the glare from an oncoming car. I threw my legs up like a Thai prostitute firing ping pong balls. Seemed to work.

When i first started riding and had no proper gear i used the carrier bag thing, works brill. Marigolds also work well under gloves to do the same for your hands.

On a long ride if the weather sets in and you've not got them on you can beg a couple of carriers off a petrol station bod and swipe a pair of the plastic gloves out of the dispensers at the pumps Very Happy If you are a crazy fool and have money to burn buy some pedal bin liners and marigolds from them Wink It pays to keep gloves and bags on you if you have 'waterproof' gear that's not though.

Tarmacsurfer's bin-bag thing is a good idea. In some drownings i've been stained blue by the dye coming out of my leather Laughing Failed gear is failed gear and you can't do anything about it at the time so keeping the water off your skin is a good idea. I got caught in a torrent in France, i'd been riding all day and my leather was filled up like a sponge. I stopped in a supermarket and bought a cheap raincoat to put on under everything else - i can't believe i spent money when i could have used a binbag Crying or Very sad I fail at pikey-bikey-ing Sad

In the days of a walkman and tapes (look it up young people Wink ) i used to wrap the giant Brick of Limited Music in a bag in my pocket. It made turning the tape over in a rain-lashed layby all the more fun Very Happy

For the first time in my biking career I have good gear this winter and its awesome dry and warm. You can buy boots for £150 that don't let water in which is that dear when then are garauntdeed for 2 years.

There speaks the voice of experience. Rolling Eyes

When on the bike I find the helmet generally works quite well at keeping my head dry.

Saying that, off the bike it sort of does the same job just as well.

On topic have invested in Gortex style socks (Aldi specials) that work very very well. Suggest you look out for them if/when they come round (Aldi/Lidl offers tend to be an annual cycle).
