Posted: 00:13 - 25 Nov 2012 Post subject: Anyone tried the carrier bag method |
 |
|
Went through a flood on Wednesday the water came up and soaked my socks and boots. Was speaking with my uncle and apparently he used to use a carrier bag around his feet to keep his socks dry (learnt it in the army apparently).
Just wondering if anyone on here has ever tried it for riding and if it has worked. ____________________ CB125>CG125>GN125>ER5>K100RS>R1100RS>K100RS

There are all sorts of tricks involving bags, another useful one for when riding long distance in shitty weather is to make head and arm holes in a bin liner and put it on under your jacket, keeps the chill off a bit better. Particularly if you've got an ancient and temperamental set of textiles that like to randomly let in what feels like a torrent of water every so often, just to make sure you're awake ____________________ I'm immortal. Putting carrier bags over your feet works well in terms of keeping out the water let in by your boots, but it can make you sweat like a paedo at a kid's disco, which kinda negates the point of it all. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

I got soaked on the way to work once. On the way home I put a large bag round each leg, taped it round boots and legs to keep in place.
Lasted about 2 miles, but that was fine, distance to bike shop. I spent a silly amount on goood textiles one of which didnt fit me and is for sale quite cheap |

I've seen guys on the motorway with their hands inside carrier bags to stop their gloves getting soaked through. Of course muffs are far better.
Personally, I'm very happy with my goretex boots ____________________ Bikes: S1000R, SH350; Exes: Vity 125, PS125, YBR125, ER6f, VFR800, Brutale 920, CB600F, SH300x4

Time to get better boots imo, my Daytonas had no issues keeping my feet bone dry through an hour long ride in that big downpour we had on Thursday. That includes having to put my feet down whilst fording since car drivers seem to assume they have right of way in my lane ____________________ 2010 Triumph 1050 Sprint ST |

When i first started riding and had no proper gear i used the carrier bag thing, works brill. Marigolds also work well under gloves to do the same for your hands.
On a long ride if the weather sets in and you've not got them on you can beg a couple of carriers off a petrol station bod and swipe a pair of the plastic gloves out of the dispensers at the pumps If you are a crazy fool and have money to burn buy some pedal bin liners and marigolds from them It pays to keep gloves and bags on you if you have 'waterproof' gear that's not though.
Tarmacsurfer's bin-bag thing is a good idea. In some drownings i've been stained blue by the dye coming out of my leather Failed gear is failed gear and you can't do anything about it at the time so keeping the water off your skin is a good idea. I got caught in a torrent in France, i'd been riding all day and my leather was filled up like a sponge. I stopped in a supermarket and bought a cheap raincoat to put on under everything else - i can't believe i spent money when i could have used a binbag I fail at pikey-bikey-ing
In the days of a walkman and tapes (look it up young people ) i used to wrap the giant Brick of Limited Music in a bag in my pocket. It made turning the tape over in a rain-lashed layby all the more fun ____________________ smile and be happy. . . .it gets right on everyone's tits! |

Also to be noted, put a bin bag across chest when very very cold. Keeps any wind chill from making its way through the zip on jacket.
But yes, plastic bags in boots do work & are very good. ____________________ Please be aware that the above post may be full of complete nonsense.
