So as with every year the thought enters my head to stop smoking, this year IS the one.

Its been playing on my mind a lot this year so anyway, I thought what wait, start the hell now.

I've got 3 hours of a boring night shift left and probably 3 smokes worth of Cutters Choice left.

I'm determined to do this fucker this time.

This is going to be my sounding board and to get bits of inspiration from others that have cracked it.

Will update as and when, feel free to chip in!

Keep smoking, but while you are, read Allen Carr's 'The Only Way to Stop Smoking'.

Problem solved.

Good luck... I cant really relate to those who find it hard to stop.

I stopped about a month ago cause I just got bored of smoking.

Since then i've only had a couple of drunken fags on a night out last thursday.

I did this and bought an e-cig for when I'm on the piss and my willpower goes.

3 and half months gone now, barely think about it at all.

Cold turkey.
Don't think, plan, read, worry or stress about doing it, just do it.
Worked for me.

I'm going to give the book another go, I started reading it and just didn't carry on. Not because it wasn't working, I just have a low attention span with books. I don't read many books but I'm up for reading it properly this time.

3rd'd.

I wanted to quit anyway but the book was really good in reinforcing my motivation and willpower.

I still smoke the odd fag when I go out drinking ( which is every 6-8 weeks at best) but the remainder of the time the thought just doesn't cross my mind at all and I don't miss it. The money saved is definitely a bonus, and of course giving my poor lungs a rest after abusing them for so many years.

My Dad went to a couple of Allen Carr meetings with the man himself. I remember the last one he went to because it was my birthday and the person who came back wasn't my dad. Allen Carr had replaced him with a pod person, my dad went away that morning a fairly amiable smoker and came back talking a lot of nonsense about a gremlin that lived in his stomach that fed on nicotine and tar.

He kept going on about this 'wee monster' that lived in his body which forced him to smoke, it was a wee bit creepy to be honest. He basically turned into an evangelical non-smoker, except about a month later he started on the cigars, I think he thought they didn't count because the 'ette' was missing off the end. (He did stop completely eventually.)

I stopped twice, restarted after the first stoppage (obviously) then stopped the second time round for good which I'm told is normal.

I used patches first time round, side effects included the most vivid dreams ever. Second time round I think I managed to identify what was making me anxious about stopping, it turned out I was more anxious about the act of stopping than of not being able to smoke any more. (If that makes sense.)

It was a very subtle difference and once I identified it, I didn't need patches or anything, I just stopped.

Yes, I miss smoking, I liked to smoke, I enjoyed it. I have dreams where I've started smoking again but in them, I'm a bit pissed off about it because its so expensive, I think having that feeling in your subconcious is also important, otherwise you'd be much more prone to starting again.

I also stopped using Allen Carrs book.

It did a lot to point out why I smoke and why stopping isn't all that hard.

@ pa_broon, I think your Dad was taking him a trifle too literally. Most of the book is concerned with what you found out yourself the second time round.

The man who returned from those sessions in Musselburgh was not my father, he was a stranger... Shocked

Ok, a bit melodramatic. I haven't read the book and didn't go to the actual Allen Carr sessions. My Dad said, half dozen people basically sat around a table that had on it several packets of cigarettes which they were all encouraged to smoke freely while Allen Carr brainwa- I mean persuaded them that smoking was a daft idea.

To be fair to the man, he did enjoy a high success rate, although in my Dad's case, he turned a normal man into a Jehovah's witness of non-smoking.

I also tried hypnotism, second time round, it was a freeby at work, no idea if it worked. When I came out of the hour long session, the first thing I did was go out for a fag.

Then I smoked a cigarette. I'm joking, I just smoked a cigarette.

It might have 'helped' me come to the conclusion I alluded to in my previous post although the guy never talked about that and I'm not even sure I went under.

i've stopped about 3 years now..also stopped 8 years ago for 3 years ... for sure this time, i will never smoke again but out of curiosity read Alan Carrs ebook couple months ago... its definantly a start but you need to want give up smoking 100% to work... one thing i didn't agree with is that he didn't recommend nicotine chewing gum/ patches etc... for me the withdrawal symptoms were pretty bad...felt like i was breathing air with no oxygen.. so i wouldn't have done it without the nicotine gum, having said that i was on that for about a year ..althou just a few half bits a day or when i was drinking .. quite pleasant little buzz but stopped using it easy enough by switching to normal gum.

i also used the 'Jan 1' stop date which i think helps opposed just deciding overnight...

i got my e cig today, it still gives me a good headrush/buzz that the first cig of the day would.
I intend to quit smoking fags, but im still going to smoke a pipe.

A lot of people havnt touched a fag since getting their e cig. Ecig juice is just flavouring, glycerin and nicotine, which in itself is no worse for you than caffeine.

Did it this way too, gave up 8 years ago.
No fake fags, patches or gum.
Still like the smell of somebody else smoking though, but the stink of old smoke on other peoples stuff is pretty vile.

We had a couple of bike jackets stored @ the in-laws and even though they don't smoke in the bedrooms (where the jackets were), when we picked them up they smelled bad Sad

Wotcha.
I smoked a pipe from my late teens ( 1977 or thereabouts ) up until 2005.
The actual non-smoking part of it was not too bad . . . .but finding something to do with my hands was far worse Shocked
I would spend more time "playing" with my pipe than actually smoking it, and when it came to problem solving at work, the first thing I'd do was reach into my top pocket and have a smoke / think.
Even to this day when out on a ride somewhere I'll pull over occasionally for a smoke Embarassed ( maybe the onset of early Alzheimer's ? ) Ah well, at least it's an excuse to take a few photographs and stretch my legs.

No point setting a date to stop... Doesn't work, people say "Oh I'll stop at new years"

I quit coming up to 3 years ago now.. a couple weeks before New Years... as Sam said, if you REALLY want to stop you will.. if you don't you won't.

It's not as "hard" as people make it out to be, that is all I can say.

When I gave up I used to munch on frozen chips, that and being in full on crunch time at work made it super easy.

I dont miss it, and now my sense of smell and taste has come back i know i will never start again - The thought of loosing that is crap.

I also have more energy, more money, and more time!
Best thing i ever did.
Thumbs Up

Another Allen Carr here - there's an audiobook you know!

I stopped on Xmas eve last year as I was at my folks' house for a couple of days and couldn't smoke there, then just carried on.

I got the bike as a treat, now I'm hooked on that.

Maybe there's a book about giving up biking, by Allen Car Wink
