Problem solved. |
I did this, been smoke free for 3 years now. Worked a treat. |
3rd'd.
I wanted to quit anyway but the book was really good in reinforcing my motivation and willpower.
I still smoke the odd fag when I go out drinking ( which is every 6-8 weeks at best) but the remainder of the time the thought just doesn't cross my mind at all and I don't miss it. The money saved is definitely a bonus, and of course giving my poor lungs a rest after abusing them for so many years.

My Dad went to a couple of Allen Carr meetings with the man himself. I remember the last one he went to because it was my birthday and the person who came back wasn't my dad. Allen Carr had replaced him with a pod person, my dad went away that morning a fairly amiable smoker and came back talking a lot of nonsense about a gremlin that lived in his stomach that fed on nicotine and tar.
He kept going on about this 'wee monster' that lived in his body which forced him to smoke, it was a wee bit creepy to be honest. He basically turned into an evangelical non-smoker, except about a month later he started on the cigars, I think he thought they didn't count because the 'ette' was missing off the end. (He did stop completely eventually.)
I stopped twice, restarted after the first stoppage (obviously) then stopped the second time round for good which I'm told is normal.
I used patches first time round, side effects included the most vivid dreams ever. Second time round I think I managed to identify what was making me anxious about stopping, it turned out I was more anxious about the act of stopping than of not being able to smoke any more. (If that makes sense.)
It was a very subtle difference and once I identified it, I didn't need patches or anything, I just stopped.
Yes, I miss smoking, I liked to smoke, I enjoyed it. I have dreams where I've started smoking again but in them, I'm a bit pissed off about it because its so expensive, I think having that feeling in your subconcious is also important, otherwise you'd be much more prone to starting again. ____________________ Didn't catch anything. |

I also stopped using Allen Carrs book.
It did a lot to point out why I smoke and why stopping isn't all that hard.
@ pa_broon, I think your Dad was taking him a trifle too literally. Most of the book is concerned with what you found out yourself the second time round. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. The man who returned from those sessions in Musselburgh was not my father, he was a stranger...
Ok, a bit melodramatic. I haven't read the book and didn't go to the actual Allen Carr sessions. My Dad said, half dozen people basically sat around a table that had on it several packets of cigarettes which they were all encouraged to smoke freely while Allen Carr brainwa- I mean persuaded them that smoking was a daft idea.
To be fair to the man, he did enjoy a high success rate, although in my Dad's case, he turned a normal man into a Jehovah's witness of non-smoking.
I also tried hypnotism, second time round, it was a freeby at work, no idea if it worked. When I came out of the hour long session, the first thing I did was go out for a fag.
Then I smoked a cigarette. I'm joking, I just smoked a cigarette.
It might have 'helped' me come to the conclusion I alluded to in my previous post although the guy never talked about that and I'm not even sure I went under. ____________________ Didn't catch anything. |

Another here to Allen Carrs book.
Just consulted my quitkeeper app ( ) and apparently i have been a non smoker for 321 days.
I dont miss it, and now my sense of smell and taste has come back i know i will never start again - The thought of loosing that is crap.
I also have more energy, more money, and more time!
Best thing i ever did.

Another Allen Carr here - there's an audiobook you know!
I stopped on Xmas eve last year as I was at my folks' house for a couple of days and couldn't smoke there, then just carried on.
I got the bike as a treat, now I'm hooked on that.
Maybe there's a book about giving up biking, by Allen Car ____________________ If you can keep your head when all about you
