At The moment I have a Yamaha TTR 250 everyday commuter and looking to upgrade next year been looking at the Yamaha XT600 or a Honda XR600

which are there best points and how capable to use everyday down back lanes and main A roads.

The XT600 is a go anywhere bike, flat-ish single-cylinder power delivery, decent traction off the line, it will happily sit at 60 all day. 80 is pushing it, will chug up to whatever.

The bike proved itself capable in Mongolia, in UlaanBaatar I met another rider, Alex from Kent, riding a TTR250 which proved itself quite capable too!

What is it you want that the 250 is lacking? Power?

For purely road riding you would be better with a CB500 or a bloody ZX6R,

My XT600 is a decent commuter but I'm going to sell because while it will happily serve as a commuter its wasted if you are not taking it off-road. It is drawn to agriculture Laughing

Cant comment about the XR600, never ridden one...

that's what i want is a very simple trail bike with kick start and air cooled engine, might consider an XT600 only thing that put me off is the dry sump.

TTR is good but fancy abit more torque a kick start and analogue speedo, it's a good bike but just lack of torque

The dry sump isn't too bad!

Trust me, the sumo was fantastic but I used it to commute.

It was an absolute beast and so easy to work on! You know you want to!

I like the TTR 600 but just having the sprag clutch puts me off and fancy an old school trail bike like an xt600.

your supermoto is very nice.

mate has an xt600 and he's Dads got one but not keen its got full stainless laser exhaust system, gold wheels, t and t, looks really smart asking my mate to ask his dad if £800 be okay for it.

Oil change on these look a little complicated but look good fun bikes nice and simply and of course for me it's a Yamaha.

The oil change is fiddly TBH, They invariably take more than the stated 2.7 litres, fill up the tank, run the engine briefly to get the oil circulating, see that oil level has dropped off dramatically, top up further, take the bike for a 10 minute run and then some minor adjustment, on the plus, once you actually have the correct amount of oil in they dont really burn any.
