Bandit 600 '98 36,000 miles.

It's always had a bit of a whine in second and it seems to be contagious and has spread to first. Ive been riding it with no noticable difference in sound for the last 10k. Im due an oil change (well 1500 past actually but have been mega busy) But what is the likley cause?

I NEED the bike so if its terminal i will just drop a second hand lump in if needs be for quickness.

Ta,

Harry

Original front sprocket?

Is the chain too tight?

Hi,
if it is only in two gears it is unlikely to be the output bearing.Possibility of your actual gears being worn is more likely as first and second get more of a hammering than higher cogs.My own GSX750f has dogged in second gear (the gear has actually broken) and while searching for a box have found a few more including GSXR's with same problem.
regards,ron

Chain is tensioned correctly. Unsure of sprocket but i did buy a new one to change as a matter of course. It's a crap excuse but i have been ridiculously busy over the last 6 months with work and making my house livable and really havent had the time to replace it yet! May drop teh oil and change the front sprocket over the weekend....

Can the sprocket be a cause of noise then?

Ta,

Harry.

I know that some OEM sprockets have a rubber vibration/noise damper built in. No sure if is rubbish though, and not sure what noise it would make if you didn't have it and should (if any).

I had it on a diversion I had forth, used to not use the gear annoying noise it spread to fifth but sold on, sorry new owner I did tell him, I've got it on my bandit now on fifth gear its bearable at mo, hardly use fifth gear these days only on motorways, live in town, I'm aware that anything gearbox related ie new gears, bearings need engine split to get at them, correct me if I'm wrong, new engine might be a good idea if it annoys you that much, or if your willing to split engine..
