...and they very kindly gave me one of these for free:
https://www.selectadna.co.uk/forensic-coding-domestic-kits.html
There's been a spate of burglaries in the village recently (I wouldn't like to stereotype, but a gambling man would probably say it's a pretty sure bet that it probably has something to do with the Pikeys just up the road), and whilst the coppers have clearly not managed to catch the perpetrators, it's nice to see they're actually doing something relatively positive.
To their credit, they have sent out a number of updates and advise leaflets, and have made a number of local visits. Whilst they can't prevent the burglaries from taking place (not without having a team of coppers stationed in every home in the village on a full-time basis), they are taking steps to see that any nicked gear can't be fenced so easily.
Anyone have any experience of these forensic marking kits? Perhaps you had some property stolen and it got returned as a consequence, or perhaps you're a tea-leaf/fence who got his collar felt as a result?
I'm going to make use of it anyway (and put up the accompanying warning stickers), but just wondered what the general thoughts on it was....

I don't get it.... how does it work?
I got a UV reactive pen off the police once. I used it to paint my face up and draw squiggly things all over my arms at raves ____________________ What would you do in life, if you knew you could not fail?

Copper - "Hi, we know who the crims are, but havent got the resource to do anything about it (nor is there political will to even if we did).
Dont feel let down, please have a vial of magic potion.
We probably dont have the resources nor will to go and look for nicked stuff but if we ever fall over it somewhere you might get it back.....
Better go I have to catch 50 speeders today..."

Its pretty good of them to come round and say hello, I think just by letting people know they are about makes people feel a bit happier that they are trying to do something about it. ____________________ DanceLikeAMonkey says: "An infinte amount of web pages available

It's a good thing. My local police did this too. I've marked up all the electronic stuff, motorbike and bicycles with it.
The police get fed up raiding some scumbags house, finding a pile of DVD players in the corner and can do nothing about it because they can't prove they have been stolen.
Find one marked with microdots and it PROVES who it belongs to in a legally admissable way.
That said, the UV stuff with the microdots is not as inconspicuous as they like to make out. You can clearly see where it's been put.

If they found a coded item and suspected it was stolen, they would still need a statement off the registered owner that it had been stolen before they could proceed.
If you buy stolen goods, you are comitting an absolute criminal offence of being in posession of stolen property so I'd keep quiet about it if I were you. Not knowing they were stolen is not, as far as I'm aware, a valid defence.
Given how the police will always go for the easy meat, if I landed up in posession of something I suspected to be hooky, I'd either keep quiet or get shot of it. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. You get given a phial of the solution.
The solution contains some small micro-dot thingies which are uniquely referenced to your property details.
You paint the solution into nooks and crannies on your nickable stuff.
If said stuff gets nicked (and recovered), the coppers can trace exactly who it belongs to.
It supposedly then acts as a deterrent to it being nicked, because if a toe-rag is found in possession of it, it can be easily flagged up as nicked stuff, nicked stuff which previously belonged to a specific and traceable person.
I didn't actually get a UV light in my kit (I guess because it was a freebie in a bag rather than a purchased kit), but that doesn't matter really - it's not that you need to see to write your name or anything, you just need to paint a bit of the solution on (typically in a place where it can't be scratched off easily, hence the nooks and crannies bit). |
Not only that but it leaves a trace on their skin and everyone we bring into custody gets checked for traces of smartwater under a UV lamp. If they have any on them, we can take a swab, send it off for analysis and link them to burglaries or cash-in-transit robberies which have a similar solution upon forcing entry into one.
I have spent a good few hours recently handing them out to homeowners on duty, the key selling point is that the kit is worth £60 retail incl. VAT. Very good idea indeed as the criminals are well aware that we check them for the solution on the way into custody as most burglars are none too unfamiliar with the process of being arrested. Not only that, but they often commit other offences as well so there's a good chance they'll be picked up sooner or later.
The stickers in the kit are supposed to be a massive deterrent and I am not sure about my borough, but other parts on the country have seen a drop of around 15% in areas where there has been a blanket distribution of the kits. |
