 |
|
I bought a top box for my bike and it is very secure! But when i pit my helmet and gloves in there when i go into town etc. I am constantly worried about it! So my question is: do you have a top box? And if so do you trust leaving things in there? Or are they easy to take off/ open? I am probably stressing over something daft... but hey i just need abit of reassurance!
(I hope i have posted in the right part?)
Thanks for any feedback |

Lol, I wish that was the case!
To be fair, no, its never happened to me - but no one knows who owns my bike when I'm not there, its just never happened. As I say, its a calculated risk.
It might happen once in a thousand times, and i'd sacrifice one helmet to save me carrying it round a thousand times!
Thats how I look at it anyway. My top boxes have either been givi, or triumph, and I trust the security on both brands to keep out the oppurtunist thieves.
Ultimately though, if someone wants it they'll get it. Its not exactly a regular occurence though is it, I can't remember ever seeing a "my top box got nicked/broken in to" thread! |

Top-boxes are relatively secure in my experience. No more secure than the bike itself, of course, but more secure than e.g. under the seat of a scooter - my GF had her helmet stolen from her Vity scooter while my scooter, with its topbox, parked right beside her was unmolested.
I wouldn't trust the rotating hook based latching mechanisms on the cheapest chinese no-name top-boxes, but I have used them in the past on cheap scooters. The double-hinged flap used by most of Givi, OEMs etc. seems better. ____________________ Bikes: S1000R, SH350; Exes: Vity 125, PS125, YBR125, ER6f, VFR800, Brutale 920, CB600F, SH300x4

So no, I don't put anything in my topbox that I can't afford to lose. |
Would be helpful if you included details of the make and model, so it could be avoided.
The Honda OEM topbox on my SH300 is bulletproof. I dropped my old SH300 perhaps 6 times, including a high-side, and the box is only scratched. Never came open in any crash. I have a very high degree of faith in it.
My Givi Maxia E55 is less than reassuring when closing - you need to push on the plastic front to make it click, and that's what's written in the manual too - but won't open with fingers and has no obvious way in. It's been on my ER6 when it was reversed into and it took a bash (it's large so it sticks out), but didn't budge or open.
My 40-odd litre moto-detail box has the double-hinge mechanism, but I don't have much faith in it - the lip on the flap isn't very meaty, and someone with a knife or screwdriver could probably get in.
The Kawasaki OEM topbox on my GF's ER6 is pretty secure, but the latch mechanism is a little finicky - when the topbox is overstuffed, it's possible for a bit of cloth (from, say, a handbag) to get caught in the flap latching area and make it all very stiff. But there's no easy access to the latch area, it's up inside a kind of "hood", so it's fairly secure. ____________________ Bikes: S1000R, SH350; Exes: Vity 125, PS125, YBR125, ER6f, VFR800, Brutale 920, CB600F, SH300x4

I think the chances of an opportunist having a cordless drill specifically for stealing stuff from topboxes are remote.
A cordless angle grinder will make short work of almost any lock you put on your bike, so you could say the same thing about all bike security. I once left my disc lock key behind in a hotel when touring, and I had to get a local locksmith to remove the lock the next morning. No more than a minute or so of grinding through the keyhole.
Even if the lock were more secure, you could cut through the plastic itself more directly.
If you're going to go to the risk, and be prepared etc., I think there are higher rewards to go for than the most probable contents of a topbox - a battered helmet and soggy pair of gloves, and if you get really lucky, some dirty waterproofs. ____________________ Bikes: S1000R, SH350; Exes: Vity 125, PS125, YBR125, ER6f, VFR800, Brutale 920, CB600F, SH300x4

Only time I had a top box it bounced off on a roundabout one morning! All the pot holes ended up breaking the mounts, good job I was only down the road when it happened. ____________________ Current : MSX 125 Past : CBR 900RR Monkeybike : c50 LAC : ZXR750 H2 : FZR600 : ZX7R P3 : YW100 : TRX850: Trophy 900 T309 : GSXR 600 L0: Monkeybike : XJ6S Whosthedaddy |

I'd prefer to take my stuff with me than have a top box, I don't want one.
there was one on my bike when I bought it, I sold it back to the shop for £30. ____________________ it is impossible to lick your own elbow...

You are wrong! My gloves cost £45 and although my helmet was free with the bike[...] Why are you so judgemental and so sure of yourself?! |
Fair point, I was £5 out, I'll try not to be so cocky next time.
I'll take it as read that you haven't actually tested the security of your top box in any meaningful way.
To answer the original question, mine is held on with tie wraps, and I don't leave anything in there that I can't afford to lose. I can't imagine that there are many boxes out there that would resist some good solid percussive maintenance of the lock or hinges. Twist from the hips, that's where the power comes from. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

no you weren't only £5 out.. if my helmet and gloves were to be stolen i would have to pay £45 for new gloves and i would have to buy a new helmet at another £45 it means i would have to [/b]pay £90 in total meaning you were £50 out
but thanks for answering properly after your cheeky remark!
