A Honda Hornet 600cc 1998. Needs a lot of TLC, new rear tyre and a general service but I'm very pleased to call this mine! ____________________ My Bikes: Lifan Beat 125cc '11 -> Suzuki B120P '76 -> Suzuki EN 125-2A '08 -> Honda CG 125 '04 -> Honda CB600F Hornet '98 -> Kawasaki ZZR 600 '99 -> Kawasaki GPZ 500S '95 (Current)

 Posted: 23:52 - 25 Dec 2012 Post subject: My first big bike! *Clean up* |
 |
|
Well I've got an update..
After snapping my bleed nipple on the front left caliper, I bought a used replacement off flea bay.
Both my front calipers are seized (binded) so it made the bike a biatch to move. I literally used a rubber mallet to remove the FL caliper off the disc. However my replacement caliper is also seized
So, that's 4 sets of dust seals, 4 sets of piston seals and 4 sets of copper washer banjo seals ordered, now I wait for the Royal Snail...
Also purchased a front master cylinder rebuild kit. When I purchased the bike, there was NO fluid in the reservoir, so that means *maybe* the MS piston, etc are seized. Should be a doddle to replace.
The rear caliper wasn't seized (fluid actually in the reservoir LOL), so I removed the caliper, cleaned, refitted (after refitting my rear wheel, pics to follow) and re-bled. Working perfectly
My new air compressor is gagging to be used, the pistons simply wont budge back down the bore, so I'm gonna blast the fuckers out
https://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j69/willyrobbie/2012-12-16112814_zps2d0b68bd.jpg
The old fluid from the rear, looks pretty nasty!
https://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j69/willyrobbie/2012-12-12235222_zpsf048f3db.jpg
Rear wheel prepping for cleaning. Some paint chipped off the rim, but I'm just leaving it. Did not take any after pictures because of the low light, but looks so much better!
As it stands now and what needs to be done:
1) FL caliper removed and is in my bedroom. FR to be removed tomorrow in preparation for the new seals
2) Rear wheel fitted but not aligned just yet, to be done another time.
3) Rear brake re-bled
4) Air box removed from the bike - I am leaving the brakes on hold for now as I am now moving to the fuel system and engine
5) Carbs still attached, need to try and get them out!
6) Removed the spark plugs for inspection - all OK. Going to drop small amounts of clean engine oil down the holes for the piston rings to make better contact with the cylinder wall after 2.5 years of not moving.
7) Fit the shitty restrictor kit
8) Remove float bowls and clean - won't bother with the whole carb assembly just yet.
9) Tipped the fuel tank upside down to remove the stale fuel (no spanner for the petcock lock nut) and it was literally dark ORANGE. I really hope there is not any rust in the tank! It was pretty full up. Left the fuel to evaporate. Got fresh fuel and system cleaner waiting.
10) Replace the fuel hoses as I bloody snapped them..way too short!
11) Fit new battery
12) Lube all control cables, fit new wing mirrors (lovely chrome ones)
13) Fit carbs, air box (air filter clean as anything) AND FIRE!!!
..oh, and this:

Genuine headlight rim. Old one rusted to buggery.
I'll update when I do more, weather doing my arse in.  ____________________ My Bikes: Lifan Beat 125cc '11 -> Suzuki B120P '76 -> Suzuki EN 125-2A '08 -> Honda CG 125 '04 -> Honda CB600F Hornet '98 -> Kawasaki ZZR 600 '99 -> Kawasaki GPZ 500S '95 (Current)

Nice little bike there mate.
We all love the feeling of a new bike, even if it's just new to us, but a word of advise, just enjoy riding it first and build up experience.
I had my first big bike for 2 months before I dropped it on the driveway!
It was a combination of rushing to leave, wife nagging me and being too eager to start the bike to let it warm up before riding off.
Anyway, as it's your first big bike there will inevitably be a time when it'll get dropped or scratched through inexperience. So don't worry about getting the bike back to pristine condition even though it may be very tempting as it'll only be a disappointment if you do accidentally damage it.
concentrate on building up experience and enjoy the ride. |

Thanks, but I've not even started the engine yet
ATM I'm trying to unseize the caliper pistons with air, to no avail. I'm going to have to reconnect the caliper and use the hydraulic fluid to push them out. ____________________ My Bikes: Lifan Beat 125cc '11 -> Suzuki B120P '76 -> Suzuki EN 125-2A '08 -> Honda CG 125 '04 -> Honda CB600F Hornet '98 -> Kawasaki ZZR 600 '99 -> Kawasaki GPZ 500S '95 (Current)
