save your money for your next bike, you'll outgrow a 125 in less than a year and want to pass your tests for a bigger bike

You need to service it to get the chain tightened. Just do it yourself.

If you're unsure get someone competent to show you.

Hello, happy to be a member of the forums,

I am a KTM Duke 125 owner, 2012 model. As of now it goes around 72 mph maximum and has a very nice acceleration rate for a 125.

I believe it needs a service as the chain is slightly lose, but after I get that done I was wondering if anyone has any ideas at all for upgrades that would increase the acceleration or top end?

I am quite interested in a stub clutch does anyone know if they even make these for 125s?

Pass your test and buy a bigger bike, there is no point trying to modify
a 125cc 4 stroke. Adjust the chain to the specs in your handbook, you don't want the chain too tight though.

I find it difficult to believe that tightening your chain will void your warranty.

In reply to your other question. It's a 125, sell it, do your tests, by bigger bike. That will make things go faster...

I think it's unlikely that adjusting your chain is going break the terms of your warranty. This is something the rider is supposed to check (weekly or so) and do themselves.

But it sounds that you (like me) will need someone to show this to you the first time. Is there anyone you can ask to help you adjust the slack? It's a 10-minute job.

Best upgrade to any 125, to reduce drag and weight..... get rid of the L-Plates.....
If it doesn't have L-Plates?
Well, 125's are what they are, and if that's not enough, you got the wrong bike mate......
They do a 200 Duke that gets good reviews, or you have any other big bike that takes your fancy and suits your wallet, taste or ego.
125's are limited performance machines, and even the fastest most high performance 125's are STILL in the wider context of the biking world at large..... pretty mediocre!
CB250 nighthawk, a twenty year old, miser-master commuter, you can pick up for probably the cost of one mod to a KTM, is cheaper to insure and more frugal on fuel, is still endowed with more performance than you will get from trying to upgrade your 125.

Best upgrades? If you haven't already got them; then Theory/Hazard test £31. Mod 1 - £15.50, Mod 2 £75.... job jobbed.

If you already have them? Then a copy of MCN and the few quid listing fee to advertise your DUKE so you can go look for something else that better does what you want.

Who buys a 125...a 2012 125 and is on more than L plates.

The reason for a 125 is cheap basic transport.

Who drops nearly 3.5k on a bike to save money, no one.
Who sounds like an 18 year old job seeker special, you.

The best all round upgrade for the price of your 125 is a KTM 625/640/690.

You can't buy a 125 and increase its performance, its expensive to do and rarely increases it more than 0.5bhp.

I ride a 125 for the 80+ mpg and the easy servicing (service history on a 125 is minimal... every learner wants to buy one, you name your price at the end of the day) I save my decent more expensive bikes for the nicer days.

Buying brand new 125 before winter from a manufacturer that has a few issues with typical weathered parts like levers and mounts etc... seems legit.

Changing sprockets will do nothing noticeable.
Different exhaust, didn't you want your warranty? If so...aftermarket non KTM stuff wouldn't be too good eh.
Performance increase, minimal.

You can't win.

Ah yeah, so I mean, you couldn't recommend changing sprockets and chain teeth to increase top end or acceleration, you couldn't suggest getting a different exhaust fitted? You just try and give me some stupid shit about L plates? Mate I don't even have L plates so half of your post is just useless to me, pull your head out of your own arse.

Someone's tired. Why did you get a 125 if you can ride a more powerful bike ?

Another point, if you're an experienced rider why do you think that tightening your chain will void your warranty ? Surely you must know this is as ridiculous as having your warranty taken away for checking the pressure in your tyres....

Implies ownership of other bikes...
Thinks chain adjustment is a service...
Buys brand new bike and worries about resale value...

Don't KTM only offer a 3 month warranty anyway?

Either way, get a car.

Regardless of why he has a 125 and whether you think he is stupid for having one, the amount of people that assumed and took the predictable high ground is quite amusing Rolling Eyes

Okay, okay, you're 17!

Fair enough if you're not 17 or on L plates then who in their right mind would ever buy a 125 duke? Because you now want more speed? Then you should of bought a bigger bike, simples!

Thread end, go home.

You're acting exactly like all the other 17 year olds who are on L-Plates.
We get a lot in here.
The first ones probably weren't treated like that.

So. If you want a faster bike, why don't you just get a faster bike?
A lot of people have been in the same situation as you and 'most all have, with hindsight or not, come to the conclusion that's the only sensible thing to do.

You specifically chose a slow bike, so it seems a bit weird to then want to make it faster.
Oh and it does not have 'very nice acceleration rate' for a 125. It's quite slow. KTM's 125EXC is massively faster thanks to having over twice the power and less weight.

Top end speed and acceleration are both a function of POWER. Changing sprockets wont find you any more of that, so will as like do little or nothing to effect either acceleration of top speed significantly.

Swapping the exhaust? Might make it a bit more noisy. If you are really lucky, it MAY (very doubtful, but MIGHT) find you a little more power.... hmm, a good performance pipe, full system, not just an end can, on an R6, can find maybe, 3-4, possibly even 5bhp.... at 'peak'... though likely to be accompanied by a slightly larger 'dip' in the mid range, proibably most noticeable just before the engine comes on the cam, making the increase feel bigger than it is as the power ramp climbs harder to get out of that hole..... So, a good pipe on a good engine.... at best 5% improvement.

Whats 5% of fuck all? Oh... ok, 5% of 15bhp? three quarters of a horse power.... not a really BIG gain, is it?

But lets face it, even if you went to town and supercharged the thing and could get a 50% increase in power..... oh... 7bhp more! Yup, just about the oomph of that rather boring CB250 nighthawk!

NOW... YOU get your head out your arse and think about this....

Its a 125, they are limited performance bikes for learners and commuters.

And advice is valid. IF you dont have a licence for anything more; best 'upgrade' to remove learner restrictions.... get a full licence so you aren;t subject to them.

If you have already done that, and you now inform us you have; then most efficient way to 'upgrade' a 125 is to BUY A BIGGER BIKE!

If it don't do what you want, AS IS, then its the wrong bike for you.

Cost of a new exhaust for a KTM Duke; that have already worked out is going to make bog all real difference to the power, would buy a CB250NightHawk that would give you 50% more peak power than the KTM and probably more % increase accross the useable rev-range. No mess, no hassle, no re-jetting required.

FGor what you could sell the Duke for, though, even wider range of possibilities are open, and even on a restricted A-Group licence, a humble 500 commuter twin, RESTRICTED offers double the power and heap more performance for probably cash in your hand, trade in against teh Duke, no spanners required.

What about a Ducati Monster? Theres a Duke Like bike for Duke like money, that gives a lot of upgrade for your cash!

If you dont have a licence restriction, then even better. And even MORE choice, and full power 600's are opened up to your wallet, and its merely a matter of how much performance your wallet and your balls can stand as to how much you can get.

Modding a 125? Well at BEST, for whatever money and effort you chuck at it... its still going to be a 125, and NEVER going to have the performance to set the world on fire.

It's never going to be much more than an 80mph motorcycle and the ONLY things in the motorcycling world that SLOW are other 125's.

Enjoy it for the cheap ecconomical learner-commuter wheels it is, or trade it up for an 'upgrade' worth having that is likely to actually deliver some discernably greater performance.

Just becouse you dont like the answer DONT make it wrong.

Let's get this straight.

On basic chain maintenance:

But wait...

Without breaking the warranty that doesn't allow you to loosen and then tighten the rear wheel axle.
