When I do insurance quotes and I tell them I'm a Race director at a track I get charged an extra £200 a year!

I said that I wouldn't be commuting to work on it so I have no idea why they should charge me extra? Whats the extra risk?

Because you're connected with people that like to go fast - presumably they've looked at their stats and the group you fall in to is one a lot more likely to have a claim for whatever reason.]

Tried some other companies?
Some companies people reckon it doesn't change much.

I always bend the truth slightly and try picking other ways of describing my job to see if it goes any cheaper. Usually it doesn't as i have about the most boring job possible Laughing
e.g if you deal with the accounts put yourself down as office admin or accounts, perhaps try just generic 'manager' ?

Tiger makes around £220 difference and go compare seems to not make too much difference, if anything It makes me ride slower and more methodically but its not me who makes the quotes so I guess that's irrelevant.

Just trying to find different names for race director or manager and try and get under that, annoying when it asks for the sector though, tough to get around that.

Reckon I could put 'office' down as my job (true) but then list my address as my army barracks? Yes I am a soldier but I work in an office!

Certain professions and some hobbies etc tend to attract higher premiums purely due to their "assessed risk"

I changed mine from insurance to 'data administrator' and it dropped a fair bit off. To be fair data administrator is prob more accurate as i work in the IT department

....until they pay out when you are a cunt and bin your ride/cage.

Though no one likes to pay more than the next guy, there are some very good and easily justifiable reasons for higher insurance premiums.
If you are in a 'High Risk' (As far as Insurance underwriters are concerned) occupation (or connected to) then you have to pay a bit more for a policy which is fair on the rest of society who will ultimately pay for your higher risk accident/s.

Just the same as High rent for a Posh area of town.

Underwriters look at many factors when setting cost to risk.
e.g. One chap lives alone in the same street as a guy same age, job, same car but he has a 17yr old lad.
So.. Same car, same job, same street etc. but as far as the underwriter is concerned the guy with the teenage son could be a higher risk than the guy living alone.
The risk to the underwriter is that the teenage son may drive the car. (Whether with or without permission license etc.) so the policy can be loaded accordingly.
This is statistical truth.

If I was an underwriter I would think it prudent to cover my ass to provide insurance for someone in the business of motor sport.

And bending the truth is still not advisable as it may go to court and a judge may 'bend' the rules too. Smile

I understand how insurance works but as you seem to know this so well, WHY am I more of a risk because of what I do for a living, I have no idea how that will change my riding skill?

For exactly the same reason as just about any other rating factor; statistically your employment group means you're rated as a higher risk. Note I didn't say you were a higher risk - the insurers don't know that either, they can only price to generics as an independent rider assessment isn't going to happen on an in-force policy count of multiple millions.

As an answer to your original question - I'd suggest it's because you're putting down your employer's trade as something which they rate as in connection with motor trade. Motor trade always punches up the premium, big style.

Yeah I understand that, and yes I agree there is no getting around the statistics, makes me wonder why people who are connected drive like idiots etc as they should know full well what then consequences are haha not fun having to get someone to mop up blood.

Might not be so much an increase in terms of frequency but severity of loss is increased - and that might not necessarily be more serious injuries as much as minor injuries to people that have a much higher potential for loss of earnings, such as motorsport stars...

i was going to suggest this too. don't tell them where your events are organised if you can, list the company name if it's not too obvious as to what you do and see what happens. Thumbs Up

I work in a role as security, which always puts insurance up (presumably as people may want to get revenge), but I'm also a general dogs body really doing a bit of everything. After trying a few different things, I find "maintenance man" to be the cheapest.

Self employed you say? Perhaps company director? Can save on both the insurance and tax if you do it right...
