PostPosted: 04:35 - 17 Dec 2012    Post subject: "Password authentication" on a Dell Laptop Reply with quote

I was recently given a spare laptop that I intended to use as a DVD/media player on quiet night shifts...

However the previous owner had not used the laptop for some time, and couldn't remember the password(s)... so now I get this screen comin up the moment my computer loads..

"This computer system, #2GBGD3J-595B, is protected by a password authentication system.
You cannot access the data on this computer without the correct password.

Please type in the primary or administrator password and pres <Enter>."

Is there a way to get rid / reset this "master password authentication" screen?

Its a Dell Inspiron 1520
Windows Vista Home Basic

Download Hirens boot cd
burn it, or plonk it on a pen drive (use google)
boot from it
offline password changer
clear admin password
save
remove hirens
reboot
feel awesome

Will give it a try after I've finished my night shift....

Hopefully have some time to myself when the O/H goes to work this afternoon Confused

(Gotta say, being paid to be at work, and getting enough spare time to do some surfing on BCF is pretty cool?!)

Is this a hdd/bios password or windows user password?

I know some of the dells have a bios password system that can be decoded with the service tag.

Ifyour very lucky removing the cmos battery (easier said than done on a laptop) can also sometimes remove bios passwords.

I've binned 2 good laptops because they had the Bios password protected
as there was no way to bypass or remove it

Usually there's a short-circuit trick that you can do on the motherboard to reset the BIOS. I've never tried it before, but I've heard stories about my friends doing it to reset their passwords.

How true it is, I don't know.

you can contact dell for a master password to unlock it

you will probably need proof of purchase before they will give you it

or you can pay somewhere like www.laptoprebirth.com for the unlock code.

or you can try searching XXXXXXX-595B bios unlock code or inspiron 1520 bios unlock code and to if you can find some you can get it for free

these were coded directly to the Bios and can't be removed or shorted
as said you can get a master code from Dell but that requires proof of purchase
I tried several hack's and codes without success and eventually gave up

If it is a bios password a forced/recovery bios update might work

Or you can try the default password "dell" or try shorting pin 3 + 6 on the epprom (not done this myself)

Latitude_MasterPW.exe might help if our machine is a d35b model

OR

inspiron_masterpw.exe for 959b models

failing that if you can't find any other work arounds you will need to transfer ownership of the laptop to yourself before calling dell to remove the password as they won't help if you are not the registered owner on the system.

Do you know that for sure?

Could be a atapwd which applies to the hard drive only.

From the text it seems like a BIOS password. On an old Dimension desktop I'd just move dip switch 5 but on a lappy who knows.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. Yes it seems to be a bios / Dell password.
I tried the Hirens boot disk but the password authentication screen pops up before the system boots on to Hirens disk.
I've also removed 2 small panels from the base of the unit but can't see the cmos battery.
And i've heard of shorting across the 3 & 6 pin of the eprom, but never tried that method yet.

Will prob try the keygen method next, cos that website was one that I was searching earlier this afternoon

...Sooo I've managed to download (on to my desktop PC) and run the keygen suggested by duhawkz, then ran the Hirens boot CD.

The BIOS now shows that I've unlocked the admin and system passwords, but even though I've tried setting them to a blank, and later tried setting them to my own password, neither change seems to have been saved by the time I reboot gggrrrr Twisted Evil

Think I'll have to leave it for now, and try again tomorrow... (my body is struggling to cope with recovering from a spate of recent night shifts, and last nights insomnia didn't help)

This may be my next plan of attack. The previous owner gave me a pile of re-installation disks (including Windows etc) Thumbs Up

If it's a BIOS password you'll be unable to reinstall anything without getting past that password. You've got to get that sorted first Thumbs Up

are you unplugging the ac adapter/taking out battery/holding the on-off switch/any of the above to reboot?
