Hey guys, just wondering what kind of MPG's you all get on the motorway... looks like I might do the odd trip down to Kent and back up to the midlands again every couple of weeks.. but I'm not too sure what kind of fuel usage I'll get.

After looking at Fuelly, I'd imagine normal riding would get about 55MPG on my ER-5, I assume this would become better when on a motorway?

Any tips for how to get the best fuel/mileage ratio would be appreciated (I'm guessing just whack it in 6th and leave it at about 5-6k rpm).

Also, if anybody could let me know how many more miles they get when riding motorways compared to city riding, that'd be hugely appreciated.

Cheers

Never gone a long motorway journey on the bike, but in the car, urban MPG is around 32 mpg and motorway MPG is 42+ mpg. The GPZ gets around 45-52 mpg and that is mostly urban.

It probably becomes a lot better on motorways judging by the car's stats.

Any long distance journey that doesn't involve lots of stop start and gear work is going to be more economical - as long as you're conservative with the throttle of course... Wink

First of all my bike is downgeared (-2t front) and 33bhp, but you already know that. I have a lead fist in the city and I get around 35-38MPG.

On a motorway trip down to Paddy's I was averaging around 80-90mph and filtering through the M25 gridlock for several miles at around 60mph. From that I got around 46MPG.

On the return journey I had the throttle pinned for most of the journey and was hitting 100mph+ (high revs considering the downgear) and got 35MPG.

If you keep to legal speeds you'll see a nice increase in MPG Thumbs Up

My 650 TA will hit about 45MPG on the motorway run but I'm a fat bastard.

Have a look at: https://www.fuelly.com/motorcycle/ for what random people on the nets are getting.

Budget 45 MPG.

It's monotonous to sit at 60MPH being whooshed by trucks and cars so you'll find keeping up with traffic flow about 68MPH.

I sit at the legal MAX 70MPH but my speedo is probably not accurate which means I could sit at 75 Indicated but my GPS says 74MPH.

My 1300 get 47/52 on the motorway at the limit. Or less at race track pace.

What sort of speed/riding style?

I've got one on loan from yambabe; while I often do the sitting at 56mph behind trucks in the van (managed 43mpg a couple of times, which included a good bit of wiggly back road stuff too), but seem to have issues with 'self control' on a bike Sad.

My riding would probably be mainly at about 70mph, at least for the first few trips, just so I can get a good indication of just how much difference it makes to fuel economy.

Like I said, from looking at Fuelly I should usually be hitting MPG's around the high 50's for urban riding, so would 70MPG for motorway riding be a realistic estimate?

I find bikes are hard to get good fuel economy out of. (for me, that is).

Did 120 miles to £15 on the GSXR 750. Mostly ridden at 80mph with the chin on the tank, few little blasts higher, 165mph at one point. This was on the German autobahn of course.

Then when the petrol light came on, just sat behind a truck @ 60mph.

I imagine I could probably get 100 miles for maybe £11/12 if I had any self control on the throttle.

If you can stomach keeping it below 70 on the motorway the mpg can be quite remarkable. Keep it around 60 and the results are amazing… until you get crushed by a milk float. Wink

I tend to peg 80ish as my compromise between mpg and staying chilled and out of conflict.

Honda say 47mpg for the 1000 and that’s pretty much spot on for my usual riding. I did manage 55mpg on the way back from Scotland, but that was sticking religiously to 80 or less and draining a whole tank between stops… …4 times in a row. That’s a lot of go-juice for one day in the saddle.

My 500 averages 54mpg on a mixed commute and I’ve managed to claw 64mpg out of it on a quiet motorway bimble, but that was with some dedicated “tard” riding at around 60mph or less.

That is terrible! Laughing I get about 45mpg+

SH300 - 85 motorway vs 70 normally, mostly city usage
ER6 - 65 motorway being boring @ 70mph, 60 when touring usually on open roads and having a little fun, 50 when riding hard

I get 130 miles per tank on either bike riding hard, 160 riding open roads, before reserve light. But ER6 tank is 33% bigger.

(Actually, ER6 tank is over 60% bigger, but I don't push into the reserve on the ER6, while I tend to drain the SH300 almost to empty as I'm never more than a half-mile from a station. But trip meter counts on both bikes end up similar when I refuel.)

Normal urban riding, I get about 160 miles on 15 litres, on the motorway cruising at 60-70 I can eke it out to 200 if I ride like a nun. Not having a fuel gauge I can never run it completely dry though since it's like playing roulette and I always chicken out once I hit the reserve...

This would be more informative if you included what bike it is Wink

CBR600f (2001) gets a consistent 47 mpg on my commute, that is a bit of a mix of town and motorway, but most of the mileage is motorway.

I get about 170 miles off 18 litres (commuting speeds up to 70-80) so err...
It costs me £20 a week to run it, I'll leave it at that Razz

About 38-41MPG.

The Aprilia Falco is absolutely shit on fuel.

Think it'll be sold before my next tour.
