Please help by giving this a read! The more publicity I can get, the better chance I have of getting a TT entry!

https://www.crash.net/road+racing/news/186802/1/tt_dream_im_no_john_mcguinness.html

Thanks!

I sincerely hope you've thought long and hard about this. The TT is a very cruel mistress and one tiny mistake could see you leave the island in a box. How much sponsorship is required nowadays? You just taking the one bike?

Cheers speed for the concern. It has been a very long consideration going back many years, especially as my family are understandably not particularly thrilled. I did the Manx GP last year so I know the circuit and risks, and after the Senior race at the Manx last year when it was wet I am at least happy the TT will only run in the dry. Getting an entry is going to be very difficult, hence the PR campaign, but fingers crossed.

I've got one 600, an R6, which is the same bike I raced at the Manx last year, and I'm currently trying to secure funding for a Supertwin ride as well. It will actually be cheaper to do the TT that it was to do the Manx, as there's no entry fees (entries alone for the Manx were a grand!) and no need to take intermediates tyres. Still looking at probably 3-4 grand for the whole event though, it adds up quickly.

Having said that, it's a drop in the ocean compared to what many of the guys will spend. The engine is standard on the R6, so that's a big saving although it puts the bike a bit behind on power, and even with things like the pit lane speed limiter, which would be a few hundred quid, I'll spend that money on tyres instead. You can get round that by testing beforehand what revs are needed in 1st gear to keep the bike below the speed limit, and just using the tacho like a speedo.

Why dont you drive a car instead of a bike because 90% of road accidents are on bikes????

Oli has done the TT before and is well aware of the dangers thats involved in riding the TT course. Its not for me as I don't trust myself but everyone who does it deserves the Kudos and respect for taking on the most challenging course in the world.

Don't get me wrong, Deano. I've got a massive respect for ANYONE that enters the TT it's just that it is the deadliest road race on earth and, not knowing Oli's background until now, might have been a step too far, too soon. Seeing as though he has done the Manx then he has more of an understanding of the course/risks than a total newbie Thumbs Up

My mate spent over 50 grand to race the TT in 2010 and he had an invite cos he did well at the Manx. He was only a privateer and didn't have much in the way of fancy kit.
He crashed out in the first superbike race so it was all a waste of money really.

I wish you all the best of luck and think it must be the ultimate test for any racer but check your finances or you may be dissapointed

This is awesome, wish you all the best! Thumbs Up

It’s my dream to do the TT one year, I don’t care if I came last – just to compete would be enough. What age did you start racing?

You have never got a hope in hell (quoted to me years ago Neutral )

I was very much in your situation, very little cash, not brilliant results on the short circuits, all the odds say no but I can assure you it can be done Karma

My top tip would be Preparation, it took two years of hard work to get onto the grid.

For me ( like many others) it was a lifelong ambition, the main thing is not to fool yourself it would be ' just the once' it is more addictive than crack.

This addiction cost me over £ 100.000 over 5 years ( working 7 days a week, living with parents, no going out, no other life.

Was it worth it ??? Yes x 100, but the come down when you can't get your fix could destroy far more than you might think possible.

If you want any help or advise please ask.

The replies will probably not always what you to hear, it is a huge struggle but with a positive mental attitude you will make it.

It will also give you massive bragging rights on Internet forums coz you achieved what thousands of others wil never achieve Thumbs Up it is a fairly exclusive club on Bcf Very Happy

Thanks for the support guys.

Cheers for your comments too Hooky. I will be as well prepared as possible, going over to the island to coach on the Manx newcomers trip which will also mean lots of laps for me to remind myself where the place goes.

Before the Manx last year I had already memorised a huge amount in terms of turn in / apex points, and after the Manx I noted where what I had learned turned out to be a bit different from what I had experienced, and a note of all my gear changes etc, so my circuit knowledge should be as good as it can be.

Will be doing Cookstown and Tandragee again in the Spring (did them last year) for a bit more roads practice.

Red Devil, I originally started racing in 2005 when I was 20. Raced up until 2008, then stopped for 2009-11 to get my finances sorted, get a proper career going, and then came back in 2012.

Rust in the tank got into the carbs and just cut out half way round gerrards.. prior to this, my rearset fell off in qualyfying and some dope caught the gear lever while warming the bike up with the tyre warmers still on.... and it pissed it down.

Il hopefully be doing the saturday. il be there either fri night or first thing saturday morning...

first test on my 2013 bike is at cadwell on sat 16th feb with no limits... fancy it???

Does't sound good for a 21st bday, hopefully mine goes a bit smoother Laughing

Yeah I'll be at cadwell, probably going to stop at Mallory on the way back down to mine for the track day on the Sunday as well. First run out of the year is just over a month away for me now! 27th Jan at Mallory, can't wait.

Good luck.

Always liked the idea of the Manx, but even that's a way of as not been near a track for over a year now, never mind at a decent pace.

Raced with you in 2005 I believe (just checked you were rookie 600 that year too).

Fantastic OP - I wish you well in your endeavour!

Might I suggest reading a book? Nothing too heavy, it's by a bloke called Mark Gardiner (you may have come across him before, if you ever buy classic bike that is).

Basically, he dropped everything to go race the TT. It's a fantastic read, that really gives you an insight into the preparation and dedication needed to race.

Unfortunately, due to the hectic nature of the actual racing, he doesn't cover that all that much, but nevertheless, it may help with an insight into what it's like?

It's called 'Riding Man' - only available through Kindle, but if you have an ipad/smartphone/computer or whatever, I think you can download Kindle apps onto them to read it.

Sounds like I'm advertising, I'm really not, I just thought you might get some use/find it interesting.

Again, good luck and I'll be looking out for you (if ITV4 actually give decent coverage for once).

db

p.s. If you need a bike cleaner/spanner turner/bacon sandwich maker for your team, give us a shout Wink.

Dave Giffould.
Started off ok, though not great (top 10 best finish in rookie 600s), then had some engine troubles which knocked me back a bit and didn't have the money for a full season anyway.
