PostPosted: 18:31 - 19 Dec 2012    Post subject: Electrical problems again. any electricians? Reply with quote

Arrg, start of christmas holidays and the lights in my bar not working. They were wired to a dimmer switch. I took off the dimmer and put on an old switch I had. they lights worked perfectly for a few hours, now are off again.

It doesnt trip the circuit or anything. It is the standard 2 wire, red and black wire. the hot live, and the power to lights.

I know I know put a multimeter across the 2. Dont have one here. I called 2 electricians and both have there phones off and are gone for the holidays. I dont want to fetch my beer in the dark until Jan Evil or Very Mad

any ideas what the problem could be?

but you must be careful with the black one because it will zap you if you stay on top of it and clamp it down

tried putting the dimmer switch back in to test if the circuit is ok or if it's just the standard switch that is faulty?

i took it off because i dont need a dimmer and i have found the dimmer part tends to go after a while. the standard swithc worked all day until evening. typical. It is an old switch though. when i can see again i will buy a new switch and install. but first i will put the dimmer switch back in tmorrow, by passing the dimmer

Either that or quickly borrow a switch off another light circuit and try it.

Normally in this situation I just grab a thick bit of wire with insulated pliers and jab it across the terminals to see if the lights come on, but the main risks are fire and electrocution so I wouldn't suggest you try it!

In all seriousness, this would be the time to purchase a cheap multimeter. I can foresee more stuff shorting out over the holidays, and if you have no means of diagnosis, you have no means of solving the problem until (presumably) mid January.

Is there no-one amongst your local mates who know electrickery?

Are you running filament lamps only? No halogen lamps on switchmode supplies? No compact fluros? Those dimmers are fairly rugged. Most are only 300watt. And yeah buy a cheap multimeter, with your amount of electrical woe it would help.
I can shout suggestions on how to use it too!

i thought of just connecting the 2 wires and turning on at the circuit breaker, but was worried about a short.

Ride the bike into the room and leave the head lamp on pointed at the bar So whenever you need more beer you just start the engine for a few minutes.
ps leave a window open.

well one coming tmorrow. if he doesnt have one will go buy. But if there is no power across the two wires, then i have a problem.

I just checked the power at the light in the braai, further down the line. On. so the problem isnt likely the wiring in the roof. There are 2 sets of lights in the bar so it isnt the light fitting. It has to be at the switch.

i hate electrical stuff. mechanical so much more obvious.

thanks. all the lights in there are those energy savers. that is why a dimmer is usless. cant dim them.

two fittings, each has 3 14w energy savers instead of 3 60w bulbs.

Yeah dimmers work with very few fluros. There are dimmable ones but you pay for the privilege.

Indeed. Dimmers tend to cause arseache in my experience; I'm not a huge fan of the things, truth be told. Well, until your mate turns up tomorrow, there's not so much that can be done, unless you reckon you can cultivate echo-location skills in the space of one evening Laughing

i can see fark all in there. Laughing i will wait till my mate comes tomorrow. before that put on the old old switch bypassing the dimmer. If I have no joy it is multimeter time and buy a new swtich while Im at builder's house. if the is no power at the switch, then the break can only be in the roof between the circuit breaker and the switch, since the braai lights are working. But to crawl in the roof in this heat. far hotter up there.

roof rats and ants are common her. I poison them whenever I hear them. But they could have chewed through the wiring

Sounds like the ants you get are a little more imposing than the ones we're used to over here. Laughing

If you have a terminal strip, just connect the 2 wires together and flick the breaker on see if it works.

i think it is the roof rats that eat wiring. The ants just go for the rat remains. I use a 2ndary poison that clogs the rat's guts, driving them out to drink. then shoot them. I dont want them dying in the roof, nor having dogs eat the poison in the rat carcass.

Tropical trees around my house, which rats climb to get at fruit. Then they try nest in roofs. it is a constant battle. dont get me started on birds nesting over my pool. Native birds I tolerate. But invasive india mynahs..... the law is we must shoot them as an invasive alien. but if they dont harm me, like a roof rat, i just cant shoot them for doing what is their nature.

No power across the 2 wires at the switch. I took off both light fittings and no loose wire there either.

Big Jessie, like all Vaalies, shoot the damned birds and rats. The Myna is a pest. Next thing you will tell me you are a bass fisherman!
