https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1992-Kawasaki-GPZ-305-GPZ305-TIDY-easy-repair-or-spares-project-/281040526621?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item416f521d1d

As per title really. Not sure if it's worth keeping an eye on this listing or not. Bit "meh" myself but its a 20 minute ride away so not much effort for me to view it.

How would you know? I'm actually fairly good with tools and not above asking for help these days.

i'd price parts prices and availability on the forks, and maybe the brake pads.

if you can land it cheap, why not. might even be worth more than you pay in parts?

They have a terrible reputation for reliability. The oil pumps have nylon drive gears which fail, the intake for the pump is pitiful, the secondary filter clogs up and this leads to top end meltdown. Then there's the cam chain tensioner...

Oh and the fuel tanks rust like a bastard internally.

Some people love them but you'll have to be prepared for high levels of maintenance if you want one.

Oh, so not really ideal. No wonder its currently so cheap. To be honest, it doesn't sound much better than my current chinese bike in terms of falling apart.

Think I'll probably pass. But still keep an eye on it. See what it does go for in the end.

Yes, one of the rare ones that hasn't eaten itself.

There are better budget first big bikes out there, get a 500 for some piece of mind (bear in mind Roger also did this and has a GPZ500 too)

GPZ500, GS500, ER5, CB500 if you're really lucky (pricier and better than the rest) or from the 400s a BROS or CB-1 would be ideal. All cheap, all reliable. Divvy would be great too.

No. I did.
Just no.

They're horribly underpowered (just a bored out 250 really) and I shit you not - when I bought it within a mile it had lunched itself. Laughing Luckily the gent I bought it from did a rebuild for me.

EFA.

I quite like mine, it's actually quite fun above 7,000rpm, but that's also when it explodes.

But I bought it through the same Quixotic perversion that saw me go Chinese a couple of times. I can afford to leave mine in a ditch; you can not. It doesn't make a lick of sense as a bike for someone who's counting the pennies.

A restricted 500 (any of them) makes a far more rational prospect.

So I expect you'll end up buying the GPz305. Wink

Ignore most the comments above, they are actually nice little bikes. 100% change/clean the oil gauze if you buy it as they block easily due to being the size of a pencil.

I had one for about 3-4 months, before I sold it for a GS500.

They go about 90mph and will sit at 60-70 all day long, good on fuel etc.

The Cam chain tensioner can go on these, but that's an easy fix too.

Anywhere around 100-150 for that would be a bargain. Although, it need a bit for an MOT, so your choice!!!

I reckon an annual engine strip down and clean out would be enough to ensure decent reliability from one of these, But then again Stinkwheel does not agree and he has 3-4engines worth of experience with these things.

They will go 100-105mph caned hard, but according to Stinkwheel the engine and oil cooling is marginal and means that full performance cannot be used for long periods as the motor cannot get rid of the heat fast enough. Also apparently a lot of smaller air cooled bike's up until the mid/late 80's did not have the cooling capacity or oil capacity to withstand extended periods of thrashing without overheating occurring or high oil temps causing lack of oil pressure etc.

I reckon the average GPZ305 will ridden normally be more reliable than the average RGV250 VJ22, but that's not saying very much, and at least with the RGV your probably going to have a bit of high speed fun&sharp acceleration up to 90mph, before it grenades spectaculary.

It is a shame though, as the GPZ305 is a much more sporty looking bike and probably handles better than it's Superdream 250/400 rival, but id probably say the later Honda CB350S with the faux Harris Magnum frame is the best bike to seek out in this capacity area, and it's probably a bit faster and a lot more reliable than even the best condition and well looked after 305 will ever be!

I would worry about keeping my nose out of peoples personal lifes and focus on the question at hand but hey each to their own.

dungbug, I have seen a few GPZ's around and to be honest, I think they're ugly as petelockwoods face after he's had his morning coffee.

Honestly, they're ugly bikes.

They may be ugly but the it'd be darn sight prettier than what you're riding at the moment Wink

Extremely capable and a lot of bike for the money. What is your total budget? Or do you just want something cheap as possible?

I had one about ten years ago. I needed something to get to work on when the engine in my cbr blew up (the irony ha ha.)

I thought it was quite a decent bike. Felt small like a 125, went pretty well and was brilliant on fuel. I had it a couple of months then gave it to a friend who proceeded to wrap it around a lamppost.

I didn't have it long enough to experience the engine woes but they are well documented.

If they were reliable I would say buy it but with all the bad press I would be very wary.
