I have an i5 3570k now Very Happy Which I am happy about.

Now onto the mobo.

I was going to go for a different one but saw this on offer.

https://www.scan.co.uk/products/asus-p8z68-deluxe-intel-z68-s-1155-ddr3-sata-iii-6gb-s-raid-sata-pcie-20-(x16)-atx

Now it says on the CPU spec page

Quote:
Ivybridge CPU's will work on H61/H67/P67 & Z68 Boards but a BIOS Update may be required for these Motherboards to support them

As the mobo linked to above is a Z68 board, what does that mean I need to do? BIOS update? I remember doing one a while ago but that was when the PC was up and running. If I plug everything together and boot up onto a win 7 dvd, will it still work enough for me to get to do a BIOS update or will it come with a CD or something?

Ta muchly.

I'd suspect you won't need a BIOS update but if you do
you could create a boot CD and load it from that or possibly from a memory stick
now the thing is I'm not sure if you can get to the Bios if it can't use the processor without the update

but it does seem to have a different Bios configuration than normal
here's the the homepage https://uk.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8Z68_DELUXE/#specifications

it does say it can take your i5

Yeh, after some more research, a BIOS update needs to be done. Will research options without having to borrow a SB cpu first.

I've only ever had flat out compatibility issues with AMD board/cpu combinations, and in those cases it generally means the machine will flat out refuse to post until you pop in an old CPU and update the board. Handily a decent portion of motherboards can be flashed from within the bios these days simplifying things massively.

I can't say I've ever needed to flash an intel board for compatibility mind, before you start sweating it, perhaps fire off an email to scan and see if they know. A search around the big hardware forums might be wise too Thumbs Up

According to various forums, the mobo I have is the GEN 3 which mean it already comes shipped with the latest BIOS update which supports ivy bridge so it SHOULD work.

Their have been issues but I have learnt how to flash a bios just using a usb stick. Thumbs Up

All is well.

Now....what GFX card.
