Hi,

I just need a spot of advice on what to do with the other half's Ford KA-ck. It's falling apart and tbh scrapping it has been in the pipeline for months. The steering rack is leaking badly, the exhaust just fell off Laughing and it needs a service, possible clutch and much more I'm forgetting.

I plan on ringing up a few breakers to see if they fancy it but I'm a bit lost on gauging the asking price, she bought it for £900... I know, I was pretty pissed at the fact she paid so much for a shitter but you know. Rolling Eyes

I'm thinking about £400 but I don't know enough about cars to make an accurate assesment. Rule of thumb I'm guessing it would need £100-£400 spending on it depending on the buyers level of car knowledge.

Any help greatly appreciated. Karma given per usefulness of reply... Laughing

I wouldn't have thought you would get anywhere close to that for scrap.

If it is MOT-less and needs work doing then I wouldn't think it would sell for £400 either. Depends on the amount of welding etc required though. It is a Ford, so the sills may be rotted through.

Stick it on ebay, 99p start and take a risk. You will get the breakers looking on there. That's how we got rid of my daughters fucked saxo.

Probably the best way to make abit more money is to put it on ebay or on your local gumtree .

scrap you'll be look anything from 100 quid up.you'll get more running it in to your local scrap metal place yourself.you'll need to take you v5 and photo i'd with you.

If it has a valid MOT right now then sell it as quick as you can. The sooner it runs out, the less it's worth.

Think that's the best bet tbh, but will consider offers from scrappers if they are decent, not expecting much thought like said my knowledge on cars is very basic, i could probably repair it but her mum doesn't want to do that.

I offered to replace the fuel tank on her other car but she ended up paying someone £80 instead... Rolling Eyes

Scrappies/breakers will give you a pittance. How saleable it is otherwise depends on the state of the bodyshell. If the inner and outer sills are rotten you'll find it hard to shift considering the other faults. If the shell is sound the other jobs aren't too bad. Exhaust is almost a consumable and the rack isn't that big a job. The clutch is half a days work on axle stands.

I'd stick it on Gumtree for £100 and say good riddance to it. £400 is very optimistic - I bought a 51 plate in nice nick with tax and test for £750 a couple of years back.

Think my brother got at least £200 scrapping his death-trap, but I can't remember.

You could break it for more money, but it would be a lot of work and you would be waiting a long time for some of the parts to shift.

Personally my thoughts would go to either scrap or gumtree/ebay, depending on which one's easiest for you. Either way, I wouldn't be expecting a lot considering that you can pick up a running and working one for £500.

Edit: reading everyone else's scrap values, I can't help but think I've remembered that value incorrectly

I had a 99 ka that failed its mot needing loads of welding doing. Scrap value was something like £100.
Put it on eBay listing the mot failures as it was just welding so if someone could do it them self they would make oodles on resale. Think I sold it for near £300. Was quite amazed tbh. They are apparently well known for enjoying a bit of rust.

I took a ford escort into the scrap yard in November last year and got £162... and that was loading it with old scrap metal too.

Break it down and sell the decent parts off it (panels, interior, engine etc)... will take longer to sell, but you will probably make your money back, then weigh in the chassis when it's been harvested to death

I think that was the same price my wife got for her falling to bits Ka a few years back, mind that even included them coming to collect it as well...saved me a journey of a few hundred yards down the road.

You've got no chance of getting that much for scrapping it. I got £50 for the last car I scrapped, and that was about the best offer going.

Take the loss on the chin, and treat it as an educational experience. Don't spend so much on a beater next time.

I didn't, was a joint effort on the other half ignoring my advice and her mum not letting her get a decent car. I think I was recovering from a crash at the time so couldn't go with.

Breakers are probably less likely to be interested.
It was around £160/tonne last time I checked for scrap metal for cars locally, may have gone down since.
Weight is just under a tonne apparently.

If it has alloys, take them off and sell them to the scrappy (if not on ebay) separately, though you will probably have to get the tyres off yourself - most will let you take the wheels off; loosen the wheel nuts first, then they'll lift it up with a forklift.

If you can, take the battery, alternator and starter (and any other motors, like windscreen wiper) out around the corner, then push it in.
These can all be weighed in separately, or sold on/kept.

As above - worth selling a few ok bits on ebay first if you can be bothered.

Locksets seize (though they are hard to get out of the doors), rear shelf is worth a few quid if it hasn't got holes in it and the glovebox catches break so they sell easily too.

Unless you are absolutely desperate for money, can you be assed though. I'd rather get maybe a couple of hundred and have it gone than have junk all over my drive/garage.

I broke an old Yamaha Virago once, yes I made more money than I would have selling it whole (the horns made £40 on their own Shocked ) but what a fucking rigmarole. Postage, packing, people winging I hadn't described the 1mm scuff on the bottom of the side panel Rolling Eyes .

Never again.

I used to part out old cars before scrapping, its a fair bit of hassle for a little money. The most valuable parts would be ecu, key barrel and any surviving keys. They are very expensive to replace as a set and wreckers tend to only have two of the three items you need.
More than £100 for a dead car is reasonable if it is collected.

Our old Citroen Picasso's Turbo went and I was quoted a rough price of £1800 for a replacement Shocked

Rang a local scrappy, they collected it in about half an hour and I ended up with £200...

Sometimes it's better to just let it go...
