Hurrah! Have got temporary teaching job. Starts Monday. If all goes well won't have to sell bike after all. Smile

Am very nervous, have lost lots of confidence. Now working out how to make the petrol money until I get paid. The only way is up, and all that...

Hhmmmm... I'm pretty sure that job is too big for a girl.. Laughing

Congratulations, hope it all goes well. Surely £ for petrol for the vara can't be that much, can it?

congrats!

While you are teaching, I will on my way to natal on a 3000 km bike trip....Day 1 takes me to Bloed Rivier and Rorkes Drift. 2 famous historic sites where the Afrikaners and then the Brits gave a Zulus a hiding....Now there is good teaching material.

You can teach kiddies for petrol money...I will be burning petrol on the katoom rejuvenating the spirits... Mr. Green

Does this mean no more cross the UK bike trip?

Excellent news, keep looking for employment elsewhere while you're at your temp position, as someone who's still in current employment is more desirable as you probably know. Thumbs Up

I will be doing another then....but time limits will make it like an eduro.... how to fit 2000+ km of gravel in a few days Mr. Green

This one is 3000 km in 6 days with 1 day reserve. A stroll in the park. Mr. Green

You must do it. A long distance bike trip, just you and the bike for days is a whole new dimension. Not a commute or just an overnight. But enough to live off and survive. Solo and group is again another leap. Solo means self reliance and all the decisions fall on you.

If you see dirt roads branching off into the highlands of scotland or wales, with next town 100+ km, then the sign saying 'freedom must be there or torn down. Mr. Green Then you have reached the ultimate Mr. Green Riding solo on remote technical dirt 100 km from people is orgasmic. Mr. Green Anymore remote and you must carry fuel.

I'm really looking forward to it. Razz I need to learn a bit more about bike mechanics first, just in case something happens.

Kradlingtons, for someone I disagree with in so many millions of ways, we have more in common than you might think. (Still working on where to stow the canapes...).

Well I wasnt brought up a whinging PC liberal pom Razz . I see reality and speak my peace without worrying about offending a PC libs brekkie Razz

Im not taking canapes. Just personals, tent, sleeping bag, tools, tubes, a compressor, Oros to mix with water in my camelbak, and biltong.

Canapes have too much stinky fish and meat that can rot. The 35-40 C heat and the luggage in the sun and above the exhaust doesnt help. Northern Zululand will be hot this time of year...and very sandy. Then I end up in southern natal, on transkei border and head to the mountains of the drakensberg to mud and rivers to ford....No canape will survive

The butler will never get a limo in on the roads Im planning to travel. Besides, if he tried, the darkies would hijack him, steal the limo, his wallet and cellphone and the canapes. Mr. Green

Unless the butler was a former para and well acquainted with their ways Mr. Green Still, I would suggest a 4x4 with a 12V fridge rather than a limo Mr. Green

Extra respect if you turn up to work and do a burnout to mark your parking space.

parking space? you would block the entire lot.

Only the bikers would get on around on the pavement or hopping the curb.

with a bike in the UK do you actually use parking spots? I park on the pavement, the lawn, the entry, anywhere

I prefer not to use them, mainly because car drivers are in the regular habit of knocking bikes over.

WTF is that pink abomination?

I can see just see MCW trundling through the veldt with one of those in tow.

You might as well be riding shotgun with Chris Eubank complete with top hat and monocle in his monster truck, madam.

Fuck, LOL: It would be like the S/African version of Top Gear when Hamster painted up his truck with gay slogans in the Deep South USA and all the rednecks freaked out Laughing Laughing Laughing

and it is further to walk, wastes a parking spot for a cage, makes them curse a bike is taking all that space etc.

On the flip side, since I dont use their parking spots, I go around the boom and dont pay for parking. I dont use their spots so why pay for one?

and why must bikes pay the same toll fee as a huge SUV towing a boat on the motorway?

Can anyone find out what school MCW is teaching at? we can link them to BCF Mr. Green

I used to do that as well. Many is the happy time in Auckland I ran over someone's grass verge and left a huge muddy tyre trail Laughing

But in London different boroughs have different rules, its ridiculous. If you are in Fulham (for example) anyone can park their bikes in parking bays without any form of validation.

But in the borough next door (Kensington and Chelsea) SOME ays are designed Residents Only and others are for general use. If you don't have the valid sticker on your bike, you can only park in the general use ones (albeit still for free).

Happily there is a free bike parking bay round the corner from Harrods, which I availed myself of last week before stomping in there in a courier-copmany jacket, dirty jeans and even dirtier trainers, and I was not stopped by the liveried doorperson at all. In fact he cheerily wished me a Merry Christmas on my way back out.

But in the draconian Westminster council, you have to pay immediately upon parking - and by mobile phone - otherwise you risk an £80 fine. You can't even park up, walk away and then pay later in the day, which you are allowed to do with the congestion charge (you have up til midnight to pay the congestion charge) - if your bike is not registered as having paid the £1/day parking fee immediately, then the parking-Nazis** can slap a ticket straight on you.

My borough (considerably more seedy) invoked some parking rules during the Olympics, but have revoked them again now, and so myself and my bloke take up the best part of a car space with our two bikes, as well as me having a car, and he currently having a (decommissioned) London taxi. We're probably not popular with the neighbours, and in fact being that far enough away from the centre of London, we COULD park on the pavement, but that would annoy the neighbours even more than us taking up too many car-parking spaces.

Parking on the pavement almost anywhere in London not only gets people muttering, tutting and glaring at you*, but also any local-authority-body from parking attendants to dustbin men threatening to remove the vehicle (and - of course - charge you a fine to retrieve it).

*not that this fazes me: I do it on purpose sometimes to attract glares and tuts, LOL

** you'd love them, Kradders, you really would ... Laughing

damn, we have nothing like that. some malls (which i avoid on principle) have booms that you take a ticket to enter, and pay at a machine so get your ticket stamped so you can leave again. I just go around, or over the curb, which ever.

I think the inner city may still have parking meters. But I would never park there and rarely go there.

We have parking guards every where. Darkies that say they will guard your car, but more and more whites doing it. I dont pay them. Bike theft is very rare here, and DS bikes even more rare.

No one ever parks on the steet. Unlikely your cage will still be there.

we have handicapped and bike parking bays, but more often than not some young lazy fit person will park in them because they dont want to carry 1 bag. That infuriates me. Like seeing some young lady in a fancy cage pull in into the mom and tots spot, with no kids, cell phone in hand, and walk off to her coffee date. Meanwhile the handicapped and moms carrying kids have to circle for parking and walk.
