If I wanted to import my project bike into the UK, as a box of bits, rather than a whole bike in one piece, what is the procedure.
Can I just crate all the bits up, ship them to the UK, build the bike over a period of time, then say I want to register the bike?
Or do they insist you bring a whole bike in?
Anyone done this before, how did you you do it, and what level of ball ache was it to do?

i'm no expert her and will probably be only half right.
Firstly I think it depends on where you import from as i think different rules apply.
Secondly I think the problem might arise when you attempt to register it as you need some documentation relating to the import and duties etc paid.
If you can give a bit more info, i will find out, as I know someone who imports bikes and parts

The bike's in Cyprus, within the EU!

Hmmmm? I have no idea.

If you sent all the bits to Blighty and then assembled it once you got here, could you not re-register it as a new/restored bike made from parts availible in the UK Wink

Or why not send your kit/stuff over first and ride it to the UK or is it not roadworthy at the moment?

Hi

Think you will be fine.

You will need proof of age, and in theory duties paid, etc as well as insurance and MOT (or on a newer bike, single vehicle approval, whatever they are calling it this year). Proof of age is easy enough as the VJMCC can supply one (as can other places).

All the best

Keith

Not helping....

You could send the parts to a number of BCF members. We amass at the 2013 BBQ and build it.

Possibly the coolest 'Show and Tell' thread?

The bike is road registered in Cyprus, I have a log book and could tax and insure it for the road tomorrow, if I wanted to.
It is currently sorned using the Cypriot system, no MOT's required for bikes in Cyprus.
Does the fact that it is just a pile of restored bits, rather than a whole bike make any difference?

If it's an EU registered vehicle, I would have thought the only thing you'd need do is re-register it as/when you/it becomes ordinarily resident.

The fact that it came over in a box is, I suspect, neither here nor there for the purposes of registration.

Hi

Don't think so to bring it into the country. However if you need to register it in the UK (which I kind of assumed) then it will need an inspection of some kind. On an older bike this is just an MOT (recorded on the chassis number), newer ones a more in depth inspection. The DVLA might want to do a quick inspection as well (well, with an MOT, not sure when it has had the more in depth inspection) to check the chassis numbers, etc.

If it were still on its Cypriot plates / insurance / etc then I presume you could ride it here without an inspection for a limited time.

All the best

Keith

Only with a wet suit and snorkel! Laughing

It's a 1988/89 bike, does that have a bearing as far as age goes with the inspections?

Hi

Not sure on the cutoff point (or whether it is a specific year or a number of years), but 99% sure that would need an MOT to register it in the UK.

Tends to mean you can get away with a few things such as a KMH speedo (not an MOT point even though it is technically a legal requirement to have an MPH and KMH speedo).

All the best

Keith

One other point.

If I were to crate everything up and declare it as personal effects, can I build the bike up, at a later date, then present it for inspection and MOT?

Hi

Don't see why not and given it is coming from within the EU I am not sure you need to declare it as anything to anyone.

However always possible they will change the rules in the future making things more difficult.

All the best

Keith
