Passed my A2 license just before Christmas and I rang up my insurance company (MCE) just to let them know when they told me it would cost £45, I questioned why it was so expensive and I was told that it was for redistribution of the insurance documents. Looked at their terms and conditions on the website where the redistribution of documents is £1.50 so don't really understand how changing a drop down box on the computer amounts to the other £43.50.

Daylight robbery to say the least! Wasn't sure if anyone else has had a similar experience and knows a way round it because I'm not really prepared to pay that price for a simple change of license, having a full license should reduce premium not increase it. But I was told if I didn't pay in 2 weeks then my policy would be cancelled and I would lose my NCB.

Ring them again and point out that neither the certificate or schedule of insurance are affected by the change and remain perfectly valid and in force as they currently are, and therefore no re-issue is required - a mere note of their records.

Thanks Arry just got off the phone to them after a 20 minute conversation. I stated your point about the validation of the insurance regardless of the change to the policy to which he replied that due to passing my full test I am now at a much greater risk due to having no "L plates". A very poor argument if I'm honest, I told him that I wasn't prepared to pay the £45 for a simple administration charge to which he then replied "well would you be prepared to pay £22.50, we've actually got an offer running at the moment" a poor attempt at trying to get me to pay for a simple change.

I was being told 2 different reasons for the charge, yesterday it was the fact that they had to redistribute the policy and make amendments. Today I was told by someone else that it was because I was at greater risk with a full license.

After all of his "offers" and "threats" of an invalid policy I said that I wasn't prepared to pay the charge and that if they put money before thought for their customers I simply would look elsewhere for my insurance renewal.

He put me on hold and after a few minutes after obviously talking with his manager he said " yeah we can put that through for free"

Situation sorted Smile

I recommend anyone else who has this problem asks follows a similar approach to prevent this process of just "taking money if they can"

Round of applause for another insurer teaching a customer that it pays to be deceptive and non-communicative. Thumbs Up

Couldn't agree more when it comes to dealing with companies.

I'm with bike insurer, under adrian flux and Aviva (3 companies for one fecking policy.....) anyway!

Emailed them asking about fees for the change, they said £0.

Emailed them saying, cool, well I've passed so can we amend the policy to reflect that?

They called me up.

Said they needed a photo copy of the full license and asked if I'd like them to send out a prepaid envelope. Sure I said.

Point? No admin fee, prepaid envelope to send them the photo copy, and brand new documents reflecting the full license.

Absolutely free for me to get my policy updated.

So luckily not ALL companies charge for that.

MCE are wnak. And are tooooo quick to hit you with charges.
I wanted away from them and was looking for my NCD entitlement form MCE to pass to my next insurer. I was told.... 'We can't give that until your policy expires.' This was two weeks before I would have been off cover and they eejits should have sent me details of renewal including a note of my new NCD.
The operators are NOT trained in underwriting or in fact much about insurance. If you do not know what you are on about then be prepared to be fcuked over by MCE's incompetents.
I wonder id Mike Edwards actually knows or give a fcuk about how abysmal his service is?
I think I have managed to get sense out of MCE three times in the two years I've had bikes insured with them. Idiots.

Yeah right, the funny thing was when he said to me that the charge incurred was due to the fact that I could now ride with passengers and use motorways which means I'm more likely to have an accident. Confused

So I asked him why my renewal quote which is due in just over a month is half the price that it currently is... His response was "obviously it's less you have a full license you're a more experienced rider"

How contradicting. Laughing

Hardly fair to criticise them for that, that is standard practice. You haven't gained the extra NCB until the policy expires, you could have a claim in the final two weeks so it can only be issued at the expiry.
That's why the new insurer gives you time to get and forward the NCB proof, you had no reason to need it before the expiry.

I don't work in a call center, not that there is anything wrong with that, it's a hard job, get people ringing up all the time asking for the impossible, and coming over all rantish when they don't get their way, or so I hear! Cool
