I'm sitting at work waiting for the AA to turn up to my Bandit 600 which is refusing to start. The starter motor is turning over happily, but apart from a couple of coughs, the engine isn't playing. It normally takes a fair bit of choke and a couple of attempts in the cold, but now there's nothing at all. It rode in this morning without any problems, and there's at least half a tank of fuel in it.

It's my first bike, and apart from being a little bit rough at low revs (around 3000ish) it's been great so far.

Any guesses?

Steve.

Not sure if this will help but your problem sounds similar to how my Bandit acts when it's really cold, just the engine spluttering and struggling to start with couple of coughs.
The trick I use however is clutch in, use no throttle whilst pressing the starter. As soon as the bike attempts to start give a tiny bit of throttle until the bike starts, then start revving! May take a couple of attempts but as soon as the engine has warmed slightly it ticks over fine. No idea what the underlying problem is though.
Good luck, let us know how it goes!

Thanks, mine's the same and I tried all that. One AA guy has come out and reckons it's fuel starvation somewhere, but they can't do much about that at the roadside. I'm now waiting for another one to come out with a truck and lift the bike to a garage.

Could be expensive!

Fuel starvation?

1st, check the vacuum pipe is seated properly.

2nd, turn the tap to PRI and see if fuel comes out of the fuel tap.

If it does, try ON. If it does...you are in trouble. Means the tap may need a rebuild. Should run fine on PRI though.

If it isn't that then check some filters, you usually have an in line filter, could be blocked.

If its like my bandit was, starter+twist throttle full. Oh and put the side stand up.

If it has an alarm/immobiliser - suspect that first!

Well, I'm home now and the bike is chained to a lamppost outside a garage. I guess I'll find out in the morning what the problem is. Thanks for the suggestions - I'll let you know if any of you got it right!

Cheers,

Steve.
