Luckily I'm at home!

Went into the bike shed this evening about a hour ago, lock was frozen as usual. Heated it with hot water bottle normally works, when that didnt work, boiling water on it, no luck, WD40, no luck, lock anti freeze stuff, no luck.

Something must of actually broke inside it, the key goes in fine now, it just will not turn. Any ideas whatsoever? I desperately need to nip to the shops and the 650 is at my friends as I caught a taxi home the other night, so no transport. AA are approximating anywhere between now and 2-3 hours.

Cheers,

Tried pushing it down (the key into the barrel), whilst waggling the handlebars?

Sounds like its the little lock in the barrel thats not budging from its hole in the headstock. Maybe try some WD-40 there.

Tried WD40, hairdryer etc.. No luck. It cant be ice at this point. And yes, the right key! Even tried the spare keys. Incredibly frustrating.

My bike shed is jammed with bikes and no electricity so it's pitch black, and I can't even back the bike out as the steering lock is on. I'll wait for the AA guy to do that if he thinks that's what he wants to do. I wouldn't feel too comfortable doing that myself in the dark with limited tools etc. What helped with yours? What was it in the end?

Mine normally responds to WD40 and gentle pressure against the mechanism whilst lifting the key, does the key turn to any of the positions at all, I can sometimes get the steering lock off but no further without more jiggling and WD40 ...

What bike is it?

My ER5's lock jammed on the steering lock, so i sprayed a fuck load of WD40 down the barrel and kept pushing the key in and out just to thoroughly coat all the internal parts of the lock, left it for about 15 mins and just repeated until it came off after a little wiggle of the key and handlebars

it was the lock barrel (seen with the key in)
its made from cast aluminium ,over time it wears that and the tumblers,
so when you put in your key they don`t retract and so stop the lock from turning... i ground them back untill they were flush again & filled the thing full of greese... but getting the thing off was a nightmare like drilling 6 shear bolts off...you can see them 2x 8mm and 4x 3mm Crying or Very sad

What more can the AA guy do realistically if you've tried to free the lock up with oil? Best bet is he trailers the bike to a garage?

I tend to try and force the bars left and right whilst pushing down and right with the key.

I bet its's weather related. I've had the same in cold weather with both the steering lock and then fuel lock.

as maybe.. but cheap materials used in the mechanisms definitely don`t make for a durable lock.

AA guy says it feels like the lock has disintegrated inside, and has arranged collection for tomorrow morning, should be covered under warranty as its only a few months old.

Unfortunately its in my tiny shed surrounded by ice, with a small entry it barely fits through normally, and with the steering lock on. I have literally no idea how on earth we are going to get it out. This is not what I need, especially since I was made redundant yesterday too. Shittiest week so far.
