hi all,

my 125 is keep cutting out when turned on in the morning unless switched on with full chock. i turn it on and then give it few rev to 4-5k and then half the chock but again it dies so i end up just driving it with half chock or 1/4 chock for around a mile and then turn the chock off

is this ok or normall ? how one should warm up his bike ?

also when getting home from work , the bike keeps cutting out when idle or behind traffic light . with choke or without it , are there any adjustments that needs to be made to the carb in order to keep the rev higher during winter so it won't cut out. i am asking because if i rev it to 2-3 while waiting in traffic or behind light , it won't cut out but as soon as i let the grip go , it will cut out after few mins

so i believe it is either because it is very cold or the carb need adjustment to increase the idle rev to 2-3 k

thanks for all of your helps

You want to set the idle when the bike is hot to around 1400rpm.

Cold and for the 1st mile or so, have the choke on if it has been left for over say... 2 hours in this cold weather.

When its warm, no need for choke.

Yeah in this weather you may need your choke on for longer, 1 mile or more is pretty normal.

Idle problems could be idle jet issues, maybe a blockage or gummy, depends on the bikes recent history (recent usage), hows it been recently or has it been sat up for / or recent purchase?

It's a 125, it should be able to come off the choke in seconds. Lawd's sakes, I start my 500 on full choke, ride away immediately, and I'm off choke by the second corner on Scumbag Estates.

You'll want to increase the idle speed and possibly enrich the idle mixture. How that's done is entirely down to your bike.

What bike do you have? Do you have a manual for it?

I'm going to stick my neck out and assume that you've got a CG or Chinese copy (fair odds), in which case you're looking for these:

If you've got a bike designed in the latter half of the 20th century though, where the choke also increases the idle speed, then I'd go with 'blocked idle jet'. That's a carb strip, you can start mucking around with Redex or a carb cleaner spray, but you're only wasting time and money.

Unless its water cooled and takes an absolute age to idle correctly (CBR/RS) etc

Every bike is different whether a 125 or not. Even 2 identical bikes can behave differently.

It's really great that on your 500 you can come off the choke on your 2nd corner in your rough estate lol

My 250 2s though needs / likes full choke to start and for about 5 minutes ticking over and warming up, then 1/2 choke for next 10-15 minutes as the warmup continues ... It then tells me to put the choke off by giving a few splutters which is the sign that its now happy to run without choke!

I'm sure if they ever made a 2nd generation version of my bike it would have a talking voice box to guide the rider through the choke operation like some Renault cars do lol. Laughing Laughing Laughing

GPZ is water cooled, and I very much doubt the OP is on a 2-smoke. Razz

Anyway, he's apparently sorted his problem, so that's all right. Wink

Think it depend on the bike.

CG I had took about 1/4 - 1/3 of a mile before it was happy off choke.

ER5 needed full choke to start from cold and was happy within a few hundred yards without any.

Hornet is full of beans on start with choke and is able to be reduced to 1/2 choke straight from firing up. Totally off after about 1/4 mile and a bit less since iridium plugs fitted last weekend.

Never had one but I am told a GS500 takes nearly a decade before its happy without choke.

thanks.

i did change the idle to 2000 when warm and it seems to be ok now.
although this did not made much differene but to increase the idle so it could keep it on

once i changed the spark plug which had done 7000 miles it all seems good now

how should one warm his bike up? i believe in you ride it with low rev and not let it stand for 10 mins

idle may not very good for the engine so anyway i turn it on wait for a minute if i can or ride of straight away

Your idle is miles too high.

What bike?
