The Megatouch cabinet, with the monitor and speakers in cost me £20
PC was donated by my dad when he upgraded Thumbs Up just put a 2nd hand 2ghz processor in it for £5
Buttons and joystick came to about £20
USB input controller cost another £20
Bayonet fitting for the bulb to light up the marquee was laying around in the garage and I stripped and reused the loom for the wiring.
Amplifier was taken from an old set of PC speakers.
All up £65.
Has 280 games loaded at the moment, should keep my 7 year old happy for a while.

Nice! Very Happy
I was tempted to build something like that myself a few years ago.

That is pretty awesome! Ever thought about making more to sell on ebay or a thing? I reckon you could get quite a bit for one of those.

They are quite easy to build Thumbs Up I have around 7000 games here which are loaded on a machine that just runs and opens MAME.

Make the coin slot on it work.
Pay him to do house work.
Open the machine up and get the money back out.
Profit.

Cool! This is one of the projects on Mr Yaigi's list, he could never get it done in the old house due to lack of space to make it and then nowhere to put it, but now he has the entire loft room as his studio, I reckon he might get it done. I'll have to show him this! Looks great!

Actually I have thought about it, and this one was just to have a play and see how everything worked out.
To do it properly I would start from scratch and build it from MDF, use a flat screen LCD monitor and spay paint it for a nice finish.
This one has an old style CRT monitor and the cabinet is made of ply, it weighs an absolute ton. Very impractical but I wanted that retro style image the CRT gives and I wanted to see just how cheap I could make it.

Cabinet was on Gumtree. Had to drive over to Norwich to pick it up but we had a family day out in Great Yarmouth at the same time. Thumbs Up
It's relatively simple once you get MAME up and running. Drill some 28mm holes for the buttons and joystick. The wiring loom for the controls is just a matter of crimping on some spade connectors and connecting them up to an input controller. Game selection from the MAME interface can be selected by the joystick and that funny 3 way button.

Very cool. Not two joysticks, though? So you and the wee-un can blast through stuff like 1943 and Aliens vs Predator together?

Unfortunately not. The first problem is that the cabinet was originally a touch screen and didn't need controls so the plastic bezel/surround is not that strong. Too many 28mm holes would weaken it to the point where it may snap. Second problem is that there is a metal framework bonded onto the underside of the plastic in places (fixing points and a lock mechanism) so the controls have to fit around it. Just not enough room and also why the buttons are a bit oddly spaced in a curve like that.

You can play 2 players but just have to take it in turns, so Vs games are out at the moment.

I'm probably going to build a cabinet from scratch out of 15mm MDF and transfer the PC into that eventually. Then we can have 2 sets of controls.
