Still not satisfied with the lights i have i'm looking at adding some more...
At the moment i have two car fog/all weather lamps that come on with the main beam, while thye make allot of difference they dont let me see all that much further ahead..
So i'm going to get two spot lamps to mount onto the indicator stalks, and get some indicators to go on my newly aquired hand guards (ala bmw)
2x 4pin relay setup
https://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~noriba74/images/bike/lightsmash1.jpg
1x 5pin relay setup
https://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~noriba74/images/bike/lightsmash2.jpg
Ive drawn two (horribly in MSPaint™) ways of going about it, only things not included are fuses and switches which i can turn both main and fog lights off.
The 5pin relay works the same as a normal relay but it has two "outputs" and the output depends on weather its switch is on or off (the switch being an electrical input from the low beam circut perhaps)
So what do you think? (ignoreing i could get a higher rateing headlight bulb) the two relay way i would be able to controll the lights individualy, but the single relay will use up less space and wires (and less to go wrong)
Can anyone reccomend any good reasonably low wattage spot lamps? (rick?) ____________________ >RidingSkills<->Tech Tips<->MyBikes< |

Two relays. One standard 4-pin, one '5-blade changeover' both inside the headlamp shell, you can get micro relays if space is tight.
https://www.vehicle-wiring-products.co.uk/VWPweb2000/relays/relays.html
Run all the power to the lights through a fuse (inline or on a fused 4-balde relay) directly from the battery. Wire it all up as shown below and use the connection that normally attaches to the headlamp bulb hi-beam as the switching current (terminals 85) on the 5-blade.
You would be drawing just below 15A from a 60w beam and 2x55w spots.
Run a new earth to the battery or a good frame earth.
This way should work and will avoid setting your bike on fire...I can't comment on how your charging system will cope but a CX should be pretty hefty. Appologies for the numerous crossovers, it was a quick job.

You can put the relays wherever you want really. The headlamp shell is handy because all the wires you want to access pass through there. Minimal disturbance to the original loom that way.
I have my relays in a waterproof plastic enclosure bolted to the front subframe just behind the lights. IP56 (jetted waterproof) rated, all the wires go through a waterproof gland in the side of it. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. So what he is saying is get on the RBZ and speak to mouse. Guru on fitting massive outboard alternators to japanese engines (he has a car alternator running off the camshaft on one of his bikes, hence how his main beam alone totals 330w and he can still run a homemade heated vest and grips on top of it. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. Sounds interesting
If i was to go for something a bit mad like that...
The fan is driven off the camshaft and its crap, its fallen off twice so i'm planing on getting rid anyways... if i can get in some decent fans there may be space for an allternator too.... (allthough i have no idea of the size) hmmmm
Thanks for that though, i will hunt out mouse and ask
Another thought was finding a single fog and mounting it inline but below the headlamp (the way the ducati multi strada has it, but biger and ugly) it would invole takeing a big bit out of the lower part of the faring and makeing a brackett of some kind.. but it dosent do anything and ive never liked that bit anyways
That way it would not risk overloading anything.... ____________________ >RidingSkills<->Tech Tips<->MyBikes< |
