right this is (probably) my fault

i have been tidying up the loom on my cg, replacing corroded connectors etc..

connected four wires from genny up (inc. coil wire) no spark

ignition isnt connected so cant be that

do i need all four wires connected to get a spark from the genny or just the black n white wire?

**edit** this is my fault it was working before i got my mitts on it.....

Have you looked for a wiring diagram in the sticky threads in this section?

b&w wire is usually the wire that comes on when the ignition is off to short the coil and kill the spark to the engine. disconnect and see if it starts. If so check the switch and that everything is wired up correctly

Have you checked the points for dirty or poor contacts or the ignition coil for defects?

Just make sure the wires from the generator are connected to right ones. Simple as it may seem they are hard to see when they are tucked up beneath the tank and I have got them mixed up plenty of times when messing about with my faulty stator. Embarassed

cheers for the posts guys

i have just printed the wiring diagram out on 6 sheets of A3 (basically covers my sheds wall)

from what i can work out,

black/white goes from coil to genny & also to ignition - ignition isnt connected though.

i think i will try an strip all connectors tomorrow as maybe there is a bad connection somewhere

if i connect b/w wire from genny to my voltmeter an earth the other probe an kick the bike should i see a voltage?

just trying to figure out how to test wires

thanks all

Connecting just the black/white wire up should work absolutely fine. Leaving it disconnected where it connects to the ignition switch is correct aswell as that is basically what the ignition switch does anyway in the ON position (disconnects the wire from the green negative wire going to the ignition switch). When in the OFF postion it will short out the spark wire with earth causing no spark.

What you now need to do is check if the earth/negative is wired/connected correctly. First using a multimeter, switch it to continuity test (the one that beeps) and put one probe on the negative on the battery and the other on the black/white wire. If there is any continuity then that is the problem and there is a short somewhere in the loom.

Next check the earth at the ignition coil and test between the green spade connector for the coil and negative on the battery. If there is no continuity then there is a break in the wiring loom or it is not connected. You can even check the frame is earthed at all by putting the multimeter probe on any bare metal eg, the fork stanchion and the other on the negative terminal.

I assume you've not adjusted/gone anywhere near the points? Also if you do get the bike running, put the choke on full with no throttle to kill the engine without the ignition switch Thumbs Up

thanks for the reply Tom

yep i haven't touched the points etc...

the engine has been out the bike for a few months since it last ran...

all i have done is snipped off connectors on the 4 wires by the genny (as they were really short) an also lengthened the wire from the coil (black/white)

if i connect a live from the battery to the wire to the coil an earth the neg to the frame. should i get a spark?

i "think" i have sussed it

the coil is earthing on the frame!?

im getting continuity when the coil is fitted to the frame - if touch green (earth) on the loom an touch the low tension wire coming off coil i get a circuit

im guessing this shouldn't happen?

thanks for all the help Smile
