 |
|
Basically I'm starting to think about springtime ride outs. I quite often ride with a topbox, so ican sling my chain and lock in there easily. But for rideouts i don't want to look like the fastest pizza boy in Kent, so it'll be off and replaced by the single seat cowl.
Now last time i used adisc lock was back in November when i was woking in Central London, I got provided secure underground parking, so decided to use the disc lock, a cheapy from Aldi. Now it was one of my best friend's engagement party after i finished, so I was gonna be in a hurry to get home. I got back to the bike ready to go and tried to take the disc lock off, but it would not budge at all. I was stuck there for 20 minutes banging it and fiddling with the key, and finally the pin came out, but the lock was ruined and wouldn't work anymore.
I've looked at dearer models and to be honest they look like they are just rebadged versions of the same sort of cheapy i had.
I need something to carry with me on rideouts, but i'm really not confident with disc locks. Is this a thing that has happened to many other people or was I just unlucky? ____________________ Current bike........'09 Honda CBF 125, seeking new big bike............New bike found '01 Honda VFR 800 |

No, I've never had a disc lock stick.
Disc locks with disc tumbler locking mechanisms (most common - keys with angular cutouts on them, and a lock hole containing flat discs) are prone to turning with the key only partially inserted (usually they don't unlock in this state though). Getting all the discs lined up so that you can fully insert the key is sometimes a bit of a pain, especially if the disc lock is alarmed, and you're racing against time before the alarm goes off.
I think it might be possible to damage the lock if you force the key to turn when it hasn't been fully inserted. Maybe this is what happened?
I did leave my disc lock key at hotel n-1 while trying to leave hotel n, once, when touring. Disc locks generally don't need the key to lock, so I was able to lock it up the night before. I needed to call a locksmith out, and the disc lock came off after 3 minutes or so with a high speed drill with grinding attachment on it - went through the whole lock mechanism. Thankfully I never put my security keys on the same keyring as the vehicle keys. ____________________ Bikes: S1000R, SH350; Exes: Vity 125, PS125, YBR125, ER6f, VFR800, Brutale 920, CB600F, SH300x4

Beware some cheap ones not only have a crapy lock but are easily shattered with a hammer. Cast disc locks are not very strong at all. I forgot to take mine off and it smashed to pieces upon hitting my calliper! ____________________ Honda H100S2 Rebuild - https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=253852 |

On a ride out? What sort of opportunist thieves are you expecting?
In that situation, park next to a nicer bike with no security, job done.
If you really want to slap something on, a visual deterrent will do. Heck, you can get a chunky looking padlock at the £1 shop. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

In my experience it's been a bit hit and miss with regards quality and price. I bought an ABUS disc lock for £30 and it only lasted about 20 uses before it kept getting stuck - even with a daily application of oil/grease, luckily I was able to get a full refund. Conversely, I bought a cheapy for £6 and it's still going strong after 3 months' use. The cheapy even looked better than the ABUS, as it was all solid metal, whereas the ABUS was part metal, part plastic. |
