Basically I'm starting to think about springtime ride outs. I quite often ride with a topbox, so ican sling my chain and lock in there easily. But for rideouts i don't want to look like the fastest pizza boy in Kent, so it'll be off and replaced by the single seat cowl.

Now last time i used adisc lock was back in November when i was woking in Central London, I got provided secure underground parking, so decided to use the disc lock, a cheapy from Aldi. Now it was one of my best friend's engagement party after i finished, so I was gonna be in a hurry to get home. I got back to the bike ready to go and tried to take the disc lock off, but it would not budge at all. I was stuck there for 20 minutes banging it and fiddling with the key, and finally the pin came out, but the lock was ruined and wouldn't work anymore.

I've looked at dearer models and to be honest they look like they are just rebadged versions of the same sort of cheapy i had.

I need something to carry with me on rideouts, but i'm really not confident with disc locks. Is this a thing that has happened to many other people or was I just unlucky?

I think you were unlucky, my Xena lock has been great from the start. The battery for the alarm died a long time ago, but the lock itself is still fine!

No, I've never had a disc lock stick.

Disc locks with disc tumbler locking mechanisms (most common - keys with angular cutouts on them, and a lock hole containing flat discs) are prone to turning with the key only partially inserted (usually they don't unlock in this state though). Getting all the discs lined up so that you can fully insert the key is sometimes a bit of a pain, especially if the disc lock is alarmed, and you're racing against time before the alarm goes off.

I think it might be possible to damage the lock if you force the key to turn when it hasn't been fully inserted. Maybe this is what happened?

I did leave my disc lock key at hotel n-1 while trying to leave hotel n, once, when touring. Disc locks generally don't need the key to lock, so I was able to lock it up the night before. I needed to call a locksmith out, and the disc lock came off after 3 minutes or so with a high speed drill with grinding attachment on it - went through the whole lock mechanism. Thankfully I never put my security keys on the same keyring as the vehicle keys.

I've had the alarm function of a disc lock fail, but never the locking mechanism it self.
If your worried, get a datatool shackle lock. It's what I use at the moment and works a treat Thumbs Up
Not alot to go wrong with it either

My moody eBay job disc lock for £6 has always been fine, as has my £35 alarmed one.

Have you noticed much difference between the 2? They all look very similar, obviously i can't see the internals of the metal, but i'm very suspicious that a £10 1 will be the same as a £30 unit

The differences are minimal, think you can get cheapy Alarmed ones too, and IMO it might not be the best but it is better than nothing and acts as a visual deterrent, which is what you want really

Beware some cheap ones not only have a crapy lock but are easily shattered with a hammer. Cast disc locks are not very strong at all. I forgot to take mine off and it smashed to pieces upon hitting my calliper! Shocked

On a ride out? What sort of opportunist thieves are you expecting?

In that situation, park next to a nicer bike with no security, job done.

If you really want to slap something on, a visual deterrent will do. Heck, you can get a chunky looking padlock at the £1 shop.

In my experience it's been a bit hit and miss with regards quality and price. I bought an ABUS disc lock for £30 and it only lasted about 20 uses before it kept getting stuck - even with a daily application of oil/grease, luckily I was able to get a full refund. Conversely, I bought a cheapy for £6 and it's still going strong after 3 months' use. The cheapy even looked better than the ABUS, as it was all solid metal, whereas the ABUS was part metal, part plastic.

No disk lock is a very good method of security. If you are going to get one, get one with a built in alarm, it will be the most useful aspect of it.

My bike is all belled up, but I do see the merits of an alarmed disc lock. Any suggestions, is it really worth paying out for a xena at around £30 minimum, or is a £10 jobbie from ebay just as good?

Rogue, I would appreciate it, see the bit at the black end to the loop gap just doesnt SEAM to be long enough, However there is probably a good chance im trying to fit it incorrectly. im a bit blonde from time to time even for a bloke LOL

Ok hopefully this will help your fit datatool Thumbs Up
Excuse the random rotation of the photos, photobucket decided to flip them all about Rolling Eyes

This is how it sits on my disc once fitted and left alone Twisted Evil

The same shot again, but lifting up the entire lock to give you a better view

https://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu324/Rogue-_-Shadow/IMG_2368.jpg

Finally, just the shackle with no locking mechanism

https://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu324/Rogue-_-Shadow/IMG_2369.jpg

It's basically a giant padlock, one which I prefer as I find it fits easier under the pillion seat because its less bulky.
Also the fact both my Xena disc locks broke from New within 2-3 months during the "harsh" summer Laughing [/img]

I bought a cheapy disc lock from Lidl once. Way back when I had the 250.

It lasted about 6 months fully functioning (still longer than the bloody bike!), then gradually died, every time I used it it got harder to unlock/lock. No amount of oiling seemed to help it.

Now it's sat in the garage and seems to be seized solid.

I've got a squire one aswell, and that's been amazing, never an issue.

Mine stay outdoors 24/7 but I find if I keep them thoroughly oiled they don't stick. They do wear out eventually if you're locking and unlocking them all the time.

I've had 3-4 of the cheapest cheapo alarmed eBay disc locks. Basically they all seem to crap out fairly quickly (3-6 months of moderate to heavy normal use). You can probably get more usage if you want as i remember at least one of them being replaced free of charge.

One died because the tiny little hex bolts rounded off straight away when i went to change the battery for the 1st time. Still got that one, and a vague intention to drill them out. Some day.
Another developed a random loud clicking noise at all times whether armed or disarmed.
One stopped locking - you could push it shut, it just would just ping open again.
Other one i can't remember, if it even exists and hasn't been made up in my head...

I was thinking about something like the Xena XX14, but for that kind of money, i wasn't willing to take a chance (it's not got the 99.9% positive reviews i was hoping to hear). Note: If anyone knows that their customer support will care years after you buying one of those, please let me know, as this will probably lead to me buying one - i just don't want it to break after 14 months and be stuck with an expensive paperweight.

I bought an Abus one and almost straight away I started having trouble unlocking it...it was a right pain. Sometimes took a few minutes to get off and to passers by must have looked like I was nicking my own bike.

Mine has the plastic cover over the lock entrance so not even sure if its rust thats the problem. When I get my next bike ill be getting an Abloy and 19" link chain.
