Hello all Smile

my bike was due a service so i took it to my dealer and charged me £90. Looking back i feel like a mug Neutral because I thought they would be cheaper? or is this a normal price to pay?

I am not doubting that they didn't do a good job and my bike feels smoother too! Smile but is £90 too much?

It depends what work they did, it's impossible to judge value for money without knowing that.

Learn to do things yourself or forever pay high labour fees for a mechanic to do it for you!

So let me get this straight they did a service which cost £90 you paid the £90 but didn't ask what they were doing or get a receipt. So for all you know it's sat in the corner of the workshop for however many hours untouched.

You wont get much change out of £90 for just an hours labor, before even considering the price of the parts.

So assuming you had an oil and filter change, along with tyre pressures, chain adjustment, general safety check of the whole bike, and a stamp in your service book. £90 sounds about right for a shop by the time you've added on the VAT etc.

Jesus, a little bit of common sense wouldn't have amiss.

They either changed the oil, or it sat in the workshop for an hour and they charged you.

At a guess
Spark plug 7.00
Air filter 15.00
Oil 2ltrs 15.00
Oil filter 5.00
1 hours labour 30.00, which includes a little check over everything
ROUGH PRICES but 72 quid, give it a go your self,can't be that hard...
I would have thought the first one is free, but hey, how's it holding up apart from the service bill ?

To be honest i get really nervous talking to people so aslong as i pay and get my keys (i did get a receipt) and get the nod that its okay then i am fine with that... you are right though i shouldn't trust them and should ask them what they have done

Shouldn't be nervous your paying for there services, no punt, if you have a receipt then it should say what's been done, prob the only difference in you doing it is, you know it's been done, and your saving on labour charges

I think I'd be a grand under by now if I had taken my bike to a garage every time it needed something doing, and that's a CB500, supposed to be reliable Very Happy
You just have to get stuck in and have a go, even if you're not very mechanically minded like me, I will still have a go at everything short of an engine rebuild.

If you are not sure what you are doing you have 3 choices.
1-Pay a mechanic/garage.
2-Get someone who knows what they are doing to show you.
3-Get a Haynes and teach yourself.

Now you are a girly so if you are anything like my wife, messing about with vehicles is about on par with shoving your head down a toilet, it won't happen.

All Mrs PB wants to know is who to phone for car troubles and who to phone for bike troubles and if I have an account so she doesn't have to pay, bonus.

I must at this point say my wife is not stupid, she can check the oil and tyres but from the day I go away to the day I come back there is a moratorium on all things mechanical and dirty.

So if you are like that, cultivate a garage you trust, use them religiously and while you will pay for the pleasure, you will at least know your bike is being looked after. Thumbs Up

Sounds cheap to be honest if it's an oil/filter safety check (brakes etc)

It's alright to feel nervous and it's nice to hear you got a receipt does it list what has been done during the service on this receipt Question

Just remember when you are going to a garage you are getting a service. Not sure if you are interested in learning bike mechanics but if you are next time ask to watch them fix/service your bike, take notes if you have to that way you would learn for next time to save the £25ph charge. Also changing a spark plug for example takes 5/10 mins (for less experienced) and would only cost the price of the plug.

You can trust someone so much, just be wary who you are handing your money to especially when servicing/fixing your bike Thumbs Up

Sounds about right for a basic service tbh.

It usually costs me around the same price for mine and that includes an oil change, new oil filter, basic check over of the bike and any adjustments that need doing (chain tightened etc...). They usually give my bike a clean too Very Happy

I know sod all about the mechanical side of things so, I am happy for someone who knows what they're doing to sort these things out for now but, I'm picking things up bit by bit and intend to get to the point were I'll be doing most of the basic servicing myself.

I've never taken a bike for a "service" or indeed done a "service" myself - just did things as they came up.

"Been a few thousand miles, lets change the oil" etc.

I guess it makes sense to do a whole load of stuff when you've got the spanners out though.

I'm completely Haynes-taught, and while I have fucked a few things up along the way, will not happily rip apart an bike without hesitation. I've never done a bottom end or split crankcases though, but I've rebuild cylinder heads.

I've also built two bikes up from piles of parts. Bought as complete bikes, just as a pile of parts. Once you've done that a few times day to day stuff is a walk in the park. At least when you build a bike up yourself you can copper-grease everything so you won't have future trouble with seized fasteners.

What about having a full/major service done?

https://www.fasttrackmotorcycles.co.uk/motorcycle_service.php

I say this as my CB is pretty old and I haven't really had a look at it let alone a basic service since I got it and think it might be good for a bike shop to give it a once over.

I know how to change oil and spark plugs (seriously its less complicated than making a sandwich) but anything else really I haven't got the skills/tools/time.

Would it be worth getting it done, and how much should I pay? The one above is the first one I pulled off of google. .

Based on that list from the link for example most can be done by yourself just think you are paying someone £25ph to do something that some guy in a factory has already done many moons ago (bolded what you can do I've done it before so you should be able to do it). There are things that I haven't done so can't comment on them. However if you just cut out the bolded items you would be most probably saving over £80/£150. You could also add checking the tappets guessing it can't be much harder than smaller engines take the side cover off, take the rocker cover off and follow the instructions.

Tools/parts required would be as followed;

* Rag.
* Grease
* Socket set/spanners 8-24 (depending on the size of your nuts)
* Oil Filter
* Air Filter
* Spare Oil
* Feeler Gauge
* Tyre Gauge Checker
Quote:
Full Service
Engine

• An oil change - specify your grade - You have said you can do this
• New oil filter - OE specification - Oil filter can be the one behind the screw or the one inside the case (easy to do with a haynes manual for a guide). Although I've never done it on a bike bigger than 125.. can't be much different hopefully. So this guide from SnowTigeress should help Changing Oil and cleaning Strainer.
• New air filter - OE specification - Pop the cover off and if its a paper air filter replace, if its foam re oil (not too much)
• New NGK spark plugs - You have said you can do this
• Replace coolant - Rock Oil Coolant - Never had to do myself yet

Chassis & Brakes

• Brake calipers removed & cleaned - Never had to do myself yet
• Brake pistons degreased - Never had to do myself yet
• Hydraulic Fluid System flushed - Never had to do myself yet
• All levers & pivots cleaned and lubricated- Get some grease, go around the bike and spray/wipe over on any hinges, levers, locks and cables (careful not getting any on brake discs)
• Throttle & clutch adjustment - Make sure that there is no freeway (limited freeway in the throttle) and that you can use the clutch correctly to your satisfaction.
• General lubrication and inspection - Not hard check everything is working correctly
• Tyre pressures checked and adjusted - Not that hard to do really get a good tyre gauge checker and find a bike pump.
• Chain adjustment and lubrication - Simple to do easy to screw up, but a simple haynes can help you if stuck or in workshop.
• All lights checked - You can do this yourself obviously, you should do it everyday to check that they are all working

Basic services are pretty simple on bikes. Just take some time out, look on Youtube, google and you'll find everything you need to know about servicing bikes. I've taught myself to change oil filters, brakes (pads and discs), brake fluid, spark plugs.

Changing those on any bike is pretty much the same as every bike. I know for my bike I can get detailed instructions on how to strip it down to its frame and put it back together. Its just getting the confidence to do the work yourself.

As a back up I know theres some really helpful people here in BCF's workshop area that can help when I get stuck.

Save yourself £80 next time and get stuck in. Parts can be hand on Ebay much cheaper than your garage will charge.

90 quid sounds a lot for an hours labour, shouldn't it be about half that?

£90 is fine if they did the work. You don't get reduced rates just because it's a Zing Ping 125.

However, that pricing just isn't sensible or sustainable for the frequency of "servicing" that those bikes need.

I say "servicing" because all it means is dumping the oil regularly and cleaning the filters. Checking the chain tension and the sprocket, brakes and tyre wear should be routine anyway. Pop a new plug in every so often, and in fact if it's still got a Torch or other joke brand plug in it, I'd have that out straight away in favour of an NGK. Valve clearances are only a little trickier.

It's essentially trivial to keep these bikes serviced. I'd suggest that you bust out the spanners and have a go next time. There's probably a BCFer nearby who will assist for tits and gary tea and biscuits to get you started.
