Hi guys, ive got my eye on a Kawasaki zxr400, but its quite a few miles away, so thought I would put a quick post on here before making the journey.

Im a medium built 6ft bloke with quite long legs. Ive heard a couple of people mention these bikes come up a bit small.

To anyone that has owned or even ridden them, would you care to comment?

Also any pics of yourselfs on the bike would also be welcomed!

Hi mate

Might be worth running your details through on this, and compare it to bikes you've already ridden to get an idea of how comfortable or otherwise you're going to be on it:

I had a VFR400 back in 1990, my brother bought a red & black stripey ZXR400 shortly afterwards. I'm 6' 5" and found that while the VFR was small it was perfectly comfortable; I had a go on the ZXR and found it palatial by comparison. The gearbox was agricultural though.

Damn, I even have a picture of it (the muppet is one of my brothers).

They're not as small as people make out, the way people go on about them you'd think it was a monkey bike!

I'm about 6ft and my CBR 400 is fine, as the riding position on these bikes is pretty upright.

Never noticed it to feel small when I first got it, but after riding a few bigger bikes, it did make it seem a bit smaller (and more easy to throw around corners Very Happy )

The zxr is the largest of the sport 400's.

It can be comfy, but my knees are fuxord.
Sometimes i am glad for the need to fill up.

The ZXR is bigger and more comfortable than CBR 400 I found, but generally I felt neither to be particularly uncomfortable in the first place for somebody of my height (6'2).

ZXR had a little more go to it but not significantly more, did find it requires slightly more throttle action to get the most out of it, the CBR had better mid-range.

Both me and my mate had a few electrical gremlins with our bikes, reg/rec failures, melted wires and so forth mostly on his bike might I add which had less than 20k miles and quite tidy compared to myCBR.

OT but I'm amazed at the 6 footers on here happy to ride a CBR400. I'm 5'10" and find mine quite excruciating after an hour.

Me too, same height and my gull arm was terribly uncomfortable but it is a sports bike after all,Blade was much more spacious.

Good idea chris, Im in Watford.

On a site note, the value of these seems to be all over the place.

What figure should I be expecting for something low-mileage-ish with a late-ish registration?

the prices are very up and down with them. id not worry to much about late registrations and low mileage, even the youngest of them is getting on to 14 years old id be looking for a well looked after regularly used example with history to support, ive got an l3 which has done just over 34k, in the 3 years ive had it it's needed very little apart from routine maintenance with the exception of doing the headgasket on it which are know to fail around 30k on these bikes, id be looking for one that's already been done most will have by now. other than that id try to avoid one's that have been used as track bikes and try and get one with some of the worthwhile mods done such as nissin front brake calipers fitted and some sort of uprated rear shock

How did it happen? Did you get hit by a falling Piano or something?

No, but apparently it was my fault. The story...

I had a lesson out of town and my brother came along for the ride, he on his ZXR and me on my Viff. While I did the lesson he hung around in the town drinking beer, smoking spliffs and drinking cough-medicine (in Japan the stuff is awesome). On the way back he said "don't go too fast and lose me, I don't know the way home". I may have gone a bit too fast. Laughing In his panic to stay with me he miscalculated his emergence onto a fast dual-carriageway and had to choose between going under a truck or into a foot-high curb. Naturally he chose the kerb, with the resulting damage in the pics above.

The thing is he didn't tell me about the cough-medicine, which is why I thought he'd be able to match the speed I was setting (balls out as per usual, something we did regularly pissed out of our skulls through Tokyo).

Happy days. Very Happy

My first "proper" bike was a ZXR400, I'm also 6 foot. To me it didn't feel too small, until I sat on my mates R6, and then it felt a bit like a monkey bike.

Great bikes though, unless you are 6 foot 3/4+ I don't think it'll be a problem.
