I have a small dent in one of my Ti downpipes, where it goes from vertical to horizontal under the motor. I'm aware of the freezing water technique but have also heard of tapping a ball or whatever into the pipe to drive the dent out. My question is this...how fragile is titanium? I've read that heating won't help, that the shit's brittle and liable to bust open etc. So, fix it or leave it? It's not causing a problem, it just niggles me.

How small is small? Can you turn a little wheel up with a rounded profile and fit it into a rod to poke down the hole and 'roll' it out?

I don't see how that would be possible, no way would I be able to get enough weight/pressure down onto the wheel. Hammering a form-fitted bung would do it fine, I'm just worried the titanium would fail.

It completely depends on the grade and alloy of the Titanium. Pure titanium is pretty ductile.

The issue normally with Titanium is heating it up as it's quite resistant to heating unless it's done properly and close to its eutectoid point.

I've attached a journal article (it's from 1970 though) if you are seriously interested in Titanium ductility/stress capabilities.

What people might be getting the "brittle" idea from is if it hasn't been welded correctly. If the weld is contaminated (even slightly) it becomes very brittle (the weld itself) .

I think the brittle idea comes from the grade of Ti used on bikes. Generally i's quite low grade and it's been heard of for Ti valves to fail on a tuned engine.
For an exhaust it would depend on my skill and the exact damage, but i'd be tempted to give it a go.

So it should bend back ok then. I'll give it a go, I've got some Delrin I can turn to size and put a nice cone profile on. Thumbs Up

Thanks guys. Very Happy

Just make sure you drill a hole through the cone and stick some studding through it so you can get it back out Laughing

It'll be threaded onto some rod. Wasted

I don't rate the chance of success as very high for that. I think there's a real risk of it getting badly stuck too.

I don't think it'll get stuck, I'll give it a bit of clearance and the rod will pull it out given enough brute strength.

I wouldn't thread the delrin. Put studding through the plug, stick a nut on it and a few large washers to spread the load across the plastic. Then put a nut and washer(s) on the outside end with a lump of steel on the rod to use as a slide hammer to get it back out Thumbs Up
You could also use it as a slide hammer to bash the dent out.

Turn it to the pipe's I.D. (Fire a hole through the centre.
Polish the edge.
And make a dolly to bash the feckin' ding out.

Heat probably won't have much effect on Titanium as it loses it's heat so quickly.

Have you PM'd Warped for advice??
Mind you, it maybe a bit early doors for the cunt right now though.
