Looking at upgrading / just changing bike in general, budget of £2000, £2500 at a push. Been looking at K1/K2 gixxer 6's, 01 R6 and 01/02 CBR600F's.

I commute 7 days a week and go for rides regularly. I like my Hornet but am just looking for a bit of a change, mainly into the sportsbiking world. Just wondering whether there was a particular one of these 3 (or another) which excels above the others.

Cheers,
Tom

Going by other people's reviews, the R6 is .. pretty much a track bike made road legal, not exactly the most friendly for commuting.

the GSXR is hands down the best for commuting out of the sport bike world apparently... but since you chose the CBR600F rather than the RR .. the F will be the best choice for commuting.. as mentioned it is less aggressive seating position etc.

Yeah it doesn't look like I can pick up a an rr for less than 3k do that's not really a choice (I'd love one though). Anyone know what the fuel economy is like on them too? Wondering whether the cbrf's is similar to the hornet or not

There is a few CBR 600 F's on Fuelly .. some say 50mpg some say 40mpg.. the F3, F4i etc.. Really it depends how you ride, apparently some of the ER-5's on there are doing 60+ MPG avg, where as I'm barely getting 45-50 lol Smile

Yes I know I can read, it was just the available link on my browser and I cba to clean it up for you.

I wouldn't worry too much about MPG as you are getting a nice amount considering what you would get with a similar performance car. Thumbs Up

Not sure if this helps as I haven't calculated my MPG for my own CBR 600F, but it does worse than my 1.7 cage - but then I do ride pretty high in the revs sometimes...

An 01-02 CBR isn't much of a step up from a Hornet.

The best thing you could do, by a long way, is to get a bit more money together and by a B1H 636. They can't be far off £2.5k now, look amazing, have a stonking engine and have stuff like USD forks and radial brakes which are lightyears ahead of a Hornet in the handling department.

You get a Confusing because MCN review mpgs are, at best, from their test rides where they're caning the arse off of it using someone else's petrol, and at worse, complete fiction.

Try Fuelly and be sure to select "UK" units just under the logo at the top left.

There is a GSXR750 K4 on ebay right now for <£2500.

Cheaper to insure (most likely) than a 600 Thumbs Up

+1

CBR's are great bikes, loved mine. Though decent late 90's early 00's are stupidly priced by sellers.

Seen a 98 for sale for £1999 from a private seller last month Laughing

True, i just don't fancy that much of a jump up. Also it has quite a few miles on it, when i'm done with it it would have almost 60k i imagine Confused Not the best selling point as of what i know. Cheers for the info though

As a side thought, i've seen a lot of hate on sv 650's on this forum. I've always liked them, it would be a drop in power as opposed to the Hornet but the insurance is cheaper and i could get a much newer bike than what i have now for the price. Are they really that boring to ride?

GSXR 750 is probably what I'm going to upgrade to next year (assuming insurance comes down a substantial whack) - but I'm planning to keep my Hornet. Get whatever bike you want, just control yourself - Just cause you have a 750 doesn't mean you have to go nuts with it all the time.

750 is a big 600, not a small thou.

It does about 175.

My 600 does about 170 (on paper anyway)

Nothing really different. Thumbs Up

Oh and mileage, pfft. My GSXR was on 48 when I sold it.

Got it on 28k and owned it a year. Current bike has 73k Laughing

Wow, always thought anything over 40k was considered 'high mileage'. Good to know it may not be as my Hornet's just turned over to 43k today!

My old CBR600F would reliably get 45mpg or so when ridden fast on A-roads, and would comfortably get 50~55mpg when cruising. Once got 80mpg out of it, but that was in rather exceptional circumstances of escorting a friend on their 125, so was very light on the throttle Laughing

Mine was a 2000 model F4, carbed, not a 2001~ F4i with PGM-FI. From what I've heard, the FI bikes are less economical than the carbed ones. Probably because they upped the rev limit slightly and downgeared them. They also downgraded the suspension from 2003 onwards, when they brought out the RR.

CBR600F a "gaymans sportsbike"? I wonder why it was one of the best selling sports 600's for over a decade, being *the* best selling sports 600 for most of those years, only being beaten a couple of years by the ZZR600 and R6 iirc, and even then only because the CBR was slower to be updated vs it's rivals.

The CBR might be considered common and even boring compared to some bikes, but "gay" and rubbish is something it is not.

From what I've read, there are plenty of people that think the SV650 is the best budget bike ever!

I've never ridden one, but I know someone that has one. My opinion of the bike in one word? Budget. Built to a cost, low build quality. Was 7 years younger than my bike, looked 10 years older! Also has crappy damper rod forks, thus why quite a few folks upgrade them with GSXR yokes and forks.

Having said that, the friend that owned the bike thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. But then the last bike he'd rode before that was a late 80's ZZR1100 over a decade before, which was a hell of a barge!

But a bloody fast barge Laughing

I'd take a ZZR1100 over an SV650 any day of the week!
