Bike is Aprilia Pegaso 650cc

Symptons:

Bike starts fine, on choke. Then it starts to miss as if one of its cylinders isn't firing(like on a twin cyl) or like it's firing at intermittant strokes. But if I turn on the lights it idles correctly(on choke still and warming) and revs etc but turn off the lights and it's back too missing?? Once fully warm it goes away.

it's a big single and wasn't lumpy at all, idled correctly and ran fine.

This started last week after the last lot of snow, though the bike has been covered, ran and commuted.

Any ideas, cheers

It's italian, ergo the wiring loom will be shot, so you're going to have to get the multimeter out and start prodding things.

Your best bet is looking around the coils first as something is clearly grounding them out.

possibly damp gettin in ..check condition of multi block connectors & wd-40 anything electrical, under seat, fuel tank & pannels etc... wouldn`t hurt to put a volt meter across the battery terminals and switch the lights on & off with the engine running see what readings you get ?

Pull every connector off and drown in WD40. Italian electricity is a very delicate thing.

so I got the tester out and working from the workshop manual:

My recharge voltage at 5000rpm is 17.49v it should be between 13-15v

Alternator output at 5000rpm is 78v, anything over 70 is good below 70 is bad

Alternator continuity is good

Voltage regulator failed miserably on tests looks like my reg-rec has died; some terminals not showing any resistance at all. Sad

So what I think is happening is there is too much voltage to the coil, with the lights on it goes within resistance tolerances hence the normal running with the lights on.

Always happens when your skint as well.

I will test the coil tomorrow for its values as i've gotta take of the tank and half the panels just to see the coil Sad

Don't use wd40 on electrics, it will just make it sticky. It is an oil. It will attract dirt. Use electrical contact cleaner, its what it was designed for.

Check for water in the fuel, give the spark plug a check too and see the colour of the plug. Make sure that the plug lead is on properly and not wet.

doesn't sound like a 'must fix now' kinda thing. Just run the bike with it's lights on? Then fix when you can afford.

Depends on what other damage it does, to the battery for a start. The reg rec will get very hot and just having the lights on wont do much to use up the extra volts.

I noticed the battery bubbling like mad Shocked don't think this is normal but can't be sure. But it can't be doing it any good getting 17.5 volts.

So I think it's the cage till I get a new reg.

Regards
