So I left my bike outside a recording studio last night while I popped in for an hour or so - when I returned I noticed a strong petrol smell. Then I noticed a large puddle of fuel around my bike. On further inspection the hose between the fuel tap and the next bit (engine??) had been pulled out. I assume someone either wanted my fuel, or wanted to ruin my day (or both)!
Is there a way to prevent this happening? Is it a common issue? Seems a bit desperate of the person doing it - my tank can only fit about a tenners worth, and they didnt even empty it!

Probably a split hose then mate. They do wear.

Best thing you can do, is whip off the tank and check the lines over. If you managed to ride home, chances are its split slightly right at one of the ends. You could get away with just trimming it with cutters and re-using.

Check it out.

Probably some chav having a bit of 'fun'

the tap is a slow method of draining a tank, I'd wager too much risk for a very small payoff

take it's gravity fed? :\ not really much you can do to stop it, but as said it's a very slow way of getting petrol out.... so sounds like either the hose has come loose or someone wanted you to have a bad day

I'll vouch for split pipes... the rubbers decay and split over time.. Happened to me yesterday in fact while I was taking the tank off Razz

I once had somebody empty all the bikes on my driveway (four at the time!)

So it does happen, they'd even pulled the two-stroke pipe off and let oil piss all over my driveway, wankers.

The only bike they couldn't steal the petrol off was the CBR600 as the pipe is a bastard to get to without taking the tank off.

Wow, never heard of this, and if you have a carbed bike, then I doubt there is much you can do to protect the hose apart from park it somewhere safer or buy fuel injected.

My lad tells me this happens a lot at his college with the number of bikes and scooters parked up. As he says what's the point in a locking fuel cap if they can just get at the fuel line anyhow Thinking (speed of syphoning maybe?)

I'm thinking most 50cc & 125cc machines are just gravity fed fuel lines with the off/on/reserve switch. I'm guessing on larger machines with carbs and vacuum fed fuel line (i.e. engine running draws fuel required) it'd be less of a problem regarding fuel theft but still a bugger if left with a knackered fuel line. I'm also thinking injection bikes same as vacuum fed? (but prepared to be corrected as I haven't owned a FI machine).

My ER-5 is Carbed + has a vacuum pipe from the petcock but the lines are still exposed and pulling either the main petrol feed or the reserve petrol feed will result in petrol pouring out still so it doesn't really help Sad

To avoid it, ride 2 strokes, no one sane would steal petrol mixed up with oil Smile

But there's no way how to prevent it to happen + vacuum tap or not, there's always drain or prime position on it Thumbs Down

First mistake, assuming people who nick fuel are sane.
Modern 2-stroke scooters do have separate oil tank and mix oil and petrol themselves. Only known premix on very old machines and guy with MZ who didn't trust the oil pump on those so kept premix in jerry cans in his garage and carried oil bottle on his bike in case a fuel stop was required.

some bikes don't have a prime or drain position (do many? i've no idea), my vacuum fed hornet doesn't, just has res, off, on

I think the idea is if you steal a bike, when it runs out of fuel, you won't be able to ride it anymore. At least that's the theory... Rolling Eyes

My old bike that I can get to the tap on has prime, on and reserve. The other old bike has no fuel tap as it has a fuel pump, so bike effectively vacuum fed, it either works or doesn't and when fuel gauge says you're run out you really, really have.

So, how do you drain the tank? Thinking

about all you could do is use some if this
https://www.motorsport-tools.com/fuel-hose-stainless-steel-over-braid-low-pressure-8mm-id-p-250613.html and proper jubilee clips then at least they won't be able to cut it thru easily or pull it off.
the downside is if desperate they may do more damage trying to get into the filler cap etc.
