I'm rather wondering the point in asking for your average milage when renewing insurance. I know that the annual milage done is no secret, for instance it's marked on the MOT certificates for a start! In the event of a new vehicle it's equally clear that you owned the bike / car / milk float when the miles were done. However, on one of my bikes it's not just me who has been using it - so if I've said, for example, i do 3k per year but the MOT's show the bike has done 3.5k, am i not insured? My friend borrows it while his is off the road, and is covered on his policy (TPO). Is this just yet another way for the insurance companies to weasel out of paying? Any opinions please?
Ian.

They need to take mileage into fact to spot dodgy activity like if you do a lot of offroadin to your meth lab on the weekends, or are trying to provide false info they can prove to be false so they can cancel the policy and keep your cash.

I wouldn't worry about it if i were you to be honest.

I have no idea what difference it would make to your insurance in reality, but statistically I guess if you did 10000 miles on your bike you could be a little more likely to be involved in an accident than somebody who did 1000 miles a year.

Obviously in the real world, you could be wiped out as you come off your driveway for the first time.

As the insurance never ask for the actual milage on the odometer, they have no way of knowing how many miles you do anyway.

You're still insured. Mileage is asked for as a rating factor. Deliberately under-stating your mileage in order to get a cheap premium would see the insurer attempt to void the policy on the grounds of material non-disclosure but it's very rare that this would be the case, and only in extreme circumstances. Only when there's a limited mileage stipulated as part of the contract do you 100% have to inform your insurer that you've exceeded your mileage estimate - in all other circumstances it's just that, an estimate.

If you do find yourself 20% up on your allotted mileage 3 months through the policy - do the right thing and revise your estimate with your insurer, and all will be well. Otherwise, if you're sneaking over by 500 miles the difference, don't worry about it.

Would of thought you'd have replaced the clocks at some point after they got smashed up when you left it outside for a few hours?

No, this is on a private policy.
I don't think they care on the business policy when you tell them you want cover for up to 60,000 miles.

Ive never been asked for mileage proof off an insurer, and ive probably used around 10 upto now. My annual mileage is set at 2k and 9months into policy ive done near 11k

How are they ever going to prove it?
Clocks/speedo? You have since replaced them with higher mileage ones from a breakers yard when yours failed.
Mot? Refer to above.

IMO if insurance are going to be fussy about how much annual mileage i have declared then they can piss off and i will insure elsewere, no skin off my nose.

I heard that under estimating say 3k is as bad as 12k as it says your only a weekend biker so more likely to crash than someone who reguly uses their bike - if that makes sense Shocked

With the whole miles thing, someone somewhere is going to be wondering what the hell happened with my bike.... the last MOT had it registered with 9 miles, this new one has it listed with 68,000. I explained that I'd changed the clocks, but the guy said that he had to put the milage that was shown down

Bikesure asked for a signed declaration of my bike's millage and limited me to 5000 miles for the year.

they hit me with that just before taking payment (over the phone)
should have walked away, but was still a little bit cheaper than the other insurers.

screw that at renewal - although I've since passed my tests so might be different.

Limiting you to a certain amount of mileage? Instant decline for me, I'd never use that company again that's insane.

My bike mileage is limited to 5000 miles but they have never asked for a mileometer reading from me Confused

My car had a limit of 5000 miles with the last insurer, after I exceeded that I phoned up and they wanted stupid money to go unlimited. (Admiral). Changed to OneCall, premium came down, no mileage limitation.

Insurance has me totally baffled.
