I know that the annual milage done is no secret, for instance it's marked on the MOT certificates for a start! In the event of a new vehicle it's equally clear that you owned the bike / car / milk float when the miles were done. However, on one of my bikes it's not just me who has been using it - so if I've said, for example, i do 3k per year but the MOT's show the bike has done 3.5k, am i not insured? My friend borrows it while his is off the road, and is covered on his policy (TPO). Is this just yet another way for the insurance companies to weasel out of paying? Any opinions please?

You're still insured. Mileage is asked for as a rating factor. Deliberately under-stating your mileage in order to get a cheap premium would see the insurer attempt to void the policy on the grounds of material non-disclosure but it's very rare that this would be the case, and only in extreme circumstances. Only when there's a limited mileage stipulated as part of the contract do you 100% have to inform your insurer that you've exceeded your mileage estimate - in all other circumstances it's just that, an estimate.
If you do find yourself 20% up on your allotted mileage 3 months through the policy - do the right thing and revise your estimate with your insurer, and all will be well. Otherwise, if you're sneaking over by 500 miles the difference, don't worry about it. |

I heard that under estimating say 3k is as bad as 12k as it says your only a weekend biker so more likely to crash than someone who reguly uses their bike - if that makes sense ____________________ Fuelly My Z1000SX

Bikesure asked for a signed declaration of my bike's millage and limited me to 5000 miles for the year.
they hit me with that just before taking payment (over the phone)
should have walked away, but was still a little bit cheaper than the other insurers.
screw that at renewal - although I've since passed my tests so might be different. ____________________ Looking to pass your CBT / Bike tests in Bury Lancashire? try www.focusridertraining.co.uk Would recommend.

My bike mileage is limited to 5000 miles but they have never asked for a mileometer reading from me
My car had a limit of 5000 miles with the last insurer, after I exceeded that I phoned up and they wanted stupid money to go unlimited. (Admiral). Changed to OneCall, premium came down, no mileage limitation.
Insurance has me totally baffled. ____________________ Triumph Trophy Launch Edition |
