Bah! Also lost my debit card sometime between last night and today, so couldn't even buy anything today! Laughing

I was riding down this road, about 25-30mph and I start gradually winding the power on to reach 40-50mph. Suddenly I hear and feel a "clunk" sound. Immediately I clutched in and coasted to a prompt stop. As I stop I get this tap on my shoulder by one of 3 lads in construction gear who were walking down that road. As I turn around he says "Mate, this came off your bike", and holds out my chain Mr. Green

Luckily my rear wheel didn't lock up...

Big thanks to the biker later on in the evening who spotted me parked up at the side of the road and came to help. Turns out he lived really near and owned a van. He went off to get his van and then he gave me and my bike a lift to my house around 3-4 miles away. Top guy. If you're reading this, many thanks Thumbs Up

New chain is on its way now. That one isn't going back on. Now I have to resort to this for a while:

Most certainly was!

I was dreading it. But a chain is relatively cheap compared to something else happening. Thankfully the low RPM meant no damage to the bike at all!

Spend a bit of money on a decent chain, rivetted link and look after it. You were lucky this time!

Fitted it in October... I average about 120 miles a week and it was fitted about 17 weeks ago. 120 * 17 = ~2000. Plus about 500-1000 miles extra on the motorway.

So it lasted about 2-3k miles I would say.

Another cheap as chips on is going on soonish... and it'll be replaced by a rivet one as and when I can afford to buy a riveter and a decent chain. I figured that considering I mainly use the bike for commuting in the city... at city speeds... clip would be fine!

My mums bike has a chain approaching 25000km. Gets cleaned and lubed weekly, and of course the join is inspected. Ive seen a few guys missing the circlip, unawares. Usually the wear on their neglected chains is what holds the split link on. I check before any riding on a chain drive vehicle. Ive got a dirt bike riding mate that lost his circlip recovering his bike from scrub. He spent an hour or two with a 4x4 driver dragging it out, then took off hard, he didnt get to second gear before his chain departed.

I have also met vandals that will take your circlip. To replace the lost one from their field bike.

It's like you've never ever read Paddy's bodging guide! Cable tie or bit of garden wire through there, keep the revs in 4 figures, no problem... Whistle

If you can get it over to Cov with a split link in, you can use my chain tool if you want.

Thumbs Up

Wonder what happens if I give the 900 'Blade some beans ( if I ever get the bloody thing back on the road), as I've been a cheapskate and used a split link when I replaced the old chain Whistle

(It was the only thing knocking around the workshop that I could find to hold the ends together - honest guv)

This nearly happened too me Shocked During the christmas hols i was travelling from Lincoln to London quite often to work at the weekends.

Parked the bike up by the garage to oil the chain and noticed the split link was missing... Instant thoughts like "how long have i been riding on that for!" Coulda got nasty :o specially at motorway speeds..

So i ordered a rivet link and a chain tool Very Happy Figured the chain tool would last a while so worth buying one now as its nice having all the tools you need Laughing

Problem is... he took my advice. Cable tie the chain back together.

It lasted 2 miles. Laughing But it did get you to a place where a guy picked you up and got you home, so essentially, I am the AA Wink

I won't use another split link, I managed to annihilate one on the Varadero 125.

A split link on a 750 is just suicidal.

My 20mph Varadero snapped its link and it smashed through my chain guard with ease. Who in their right mind would fit a split link to anything near 50hp.. let alone 120...

Snorty, do yourself a favour before you end up with 1/2 a bike, replace that link.

as long as it is checked and cared for there is no reason why it shouldnt be fine

at work we have machinery running chains with links over 2 inches across the motors provide nearly 4000lb/ft of torque as they lift a max capacity of several tonnes, they have no problem with split links Question

its all about care and maintenance

edit

i not saying a rivet link is not better i just saying the split link is not necessarily the weakest
