hello chaps and chapets, need all of your opinions on something. at the moment im riding an Aprilia rs 125 Lorenzo edition and once i turn 19 i will get my a2 licence but with the limit of 47 bhp there isn't much choice a for good looking sports bike. i dont like the look of the older sports bikes so i am looking for something like my rs or a Yamaha r6 but i cant find any that grab my attention i read online you can restrict a bike to 47 bhp as long as it is less than 94bhp. so could you recommend me some good looking bike that would be faster than my rs de-restricted. cheers.

Impossible

everybody know's that there is nothing better looking, or faster than a de-restricted Aprilla rs,
and the lorenzo edition as well.
that's got to be good for an extra 5hp,

ill bet all the ladies froth at the gash just looking at it.

I doubt you will get a sportsbike like an R6 or something to fit in the new license categorys. I'm sure the bike has to have a certain power to weight ratio which 90% of sportsbike exceed. The other issue is not many sports 600's will have power outputs below 94bhp.

I'd guess your only option would be a sports 400 restricted to 47bhp. A ZXR400 might be a good bet although I've no idea if it will meet the power to weight ratio requirement.

Thundercat, claimed 100hp, not likely, so probably has about 90-95, which is suitable for restriction.

Not sports at all but faired and looks half decent, GSX650F

Other than that, its the older CBR600F.

Get a pointy SV650S. It will restrict the best and still looks decent. Your insurance will also likely be half that of any sports 6, if you can get insured at all.

I thought if you are 19 now you had to do a 125cc test, then wait 2 years to do the next level test? A2 test is gone now isnt it?

No, OP, is correct. At 19 you can get the new 35kW A2 category license, with no pre-requisites (other than CBT and theory).

I'd bet your license that the law will be interpreted as not restricting down from a bike that claimed more than 70kW. How would Plod measure what the bike was making before it was restricted, without removing the restriction? Very Happy

##Paddy## wrote:

Impossibru, too powerful.

There's really very little that you could describe as a "sportsbike" that can tick all the boxes. Heck, even a Hornet or a Fazer are a bit overpowered. This may have been the intention. Wink

If you want to stay strictly legal then maybe think about a fully faired SV650. I know, not sportsbike, but you're only going to be making 35kW anyway.

If I was restricted to 47bhp and wanted a sporty bike I would probably go for some second hand, cheap 400cc bike of previous era. Most likely I would go for ZXR400 as they were the most popular so sourcing the second hand parts should be easier. You can get one for £1-1.5k in decent shape and restricting it is easily done.. just 4 washers. I think ZXR400 was 65bhp as standard, correct me if I'm wrong.

If you want a sporty looking bike without restrictng it then your options are limited to new and expensive bikes - CBR500R and Ninja 300.

No way was my cbr600f putting out over 90bhp, don't think they even claimed it did as new. Probably sporty enough looking for the OP too:
https://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee81/paddy2007dug/CBR600F/Picture015.jpg

Still truth be told if you lopped half of the power from the engine it would be a bore to ride and probably slower than anything that makes that power as standard. The most fun bike I owned within that power bracket was my TDR250 but then I doubt it ticks the "sporty looking" box! The picture was the day I got it, in the end it had TZR wheels and a blue spot up front, which certainly made it handle nicely enough. Excuse 18 year old me!

Still you didn't ask for fun you asked for speed and out of my sub 50bhp bikes the GPZ500s was probably the fastest point to point. No pictures of mine, but here is a google image:

Unfortunately, decent condition ones are seriously rare now, and the few remaining are going for crazy money. Sad

If you passed your test before the end of January this year, then yes. If you passed your test recently, then no, there is no such thing as 33bhp any more, and you're restricted to a 125 because you took your test on one.

What i mean is if i pass my test when i turn 19 which will be under the new law will my 33bhp restricted bike be legal to ride as it's under the new power restriction for my age or is restriction no longer an option and must be a certain power from factory?

Thanks

No, it won't be legal as it makes more than 94bhp as standard.

Ok thats for clearing that up, il probably ride it anyway as i doubt the police will catch on and i could always argue it's a old bike and makes less then 94bhp anyway. Its as legal as taking the restrictor out on the 33bhp license like many did so fuck it.

Don't mean to hi jack thread

Do you currently hold a lincense? If so which one? If not, how come you already have this bike? Just wondering how you ended up with a bike that is outside the license that you are able to get at 19

When I went to MCN I picked up a leaflet from Honda, the CB1100 being the only bike that really tickled my fancy when I was there, but it had on the back some new bikes that you can ride for each category, in the A2 there is the new CBR500R which I think is pretty nice looking. So maybe something to think about?

James, if you consider the CBR500R I'll remove your balls. It is not a CBR, its a CB500 with a tutu Laughing
