So I'll be getting my bike in a few weeks either a gsx 1400 or a xjr 1300. Probably the gsx though!
My question is, it may be a couple of months before I get a shed sorted, will the bike be ok outside under a cover. (putting security to one side for a moment) or will it rust and fall to bits! It will be round the back of the house blocked in by the car so should be ok security wise.

ive been keeping my bike outside under a bike barn since march for the past year and its fine, well apart from the scratch on the exhaust cover when the gales managed to blow the barn free from its anchors and send it across the farm yard.

Get a decent cover, use it all the time and be prepared to buy a new one a couple of times a year. The cover will suffer but the bike will be fine. It isn't weather that rots a bike it's salt.

My bike stays under a cover most nights. The other nights it doesn't because I cant be arsed to put the cover on.

The only rust there is is on a tiny bit of my fuel tank where the paint has chipped away back to the metal.

Keep it washed and salt free and all should be fine Thumbs Up

Anything that's less than six months old and doesn't come from Argos. I don't personally like fabric lined ones as they absorb and then slowly leak moisture - just something toughish and polyester. Doesn't have to be expensive. Better to have a cheap cover and replace it twice a year than to have a pricey one and keep it wet mouldy and torn on your pride and joy for years.

GSX is a great bike, my missus's dads got one, hes done about 60,000 miles on it. Its usually kept in a garage however is left in the elements for about 12 hours a day while hes at work and for weeks at a time sometimes when he can't use the garage. Its in a really good condition with hardly any rust or flaking, and whatever there is could be cleaned off in an afternoon. Long story short, cover or no cover, the condition should be fine Thumbs Up (but get a cover because scrotes like shiny things they cant afford)

bike cover wise I have been using https://www.amazon.co.uk/SUPERBIKE-OUTDOOR-WATERPROOF-MOTORCYCLE-COVER/dp/B00308BCYM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1362347617&sr=8-1 for nearly a year. fits nicely and has 2 clips underneath to stop it blowing off. its made of pretty thick stuff and i've had no problems with it melting even when throwing it on my still hot husqvarna. it is quite pricey but after nearly a year it doesn't show a single bit of loose stiching let alone a tear, has a hole each side front and back to feed a chain through, and has a soft lining in the top.

I do believe it is this one.

Got it in a large and it's quite baggy on the Bandit 4. But might be worth checking dimensions yourself Thumbs Up

Had it 6 months and there's no sign of wear of degrading just yet.

I've kept mine outside under a cover since July. I've been very good at keeping it covered in ACF50, and I have to say that I am surprised by just how good the bike looks. None of the corrosion on the bike from the previous owner has got any worse. I have definitely stopped worrying about keeping a bike outside.

I can vouch for the r&g cover. Already lasted well longer than the argos crap, is pretty much waterproof, has lock holes front and back and just feels thick and well made. Think they're £35

avoid the Tesco cheap motorcycle cover, rubbish, better off cellotaping carrier bags together, and it makes Primark's large sizes look generous with the material.

my bike has always been kept outside since July. I use an Oxford cover which is breathable.

I was told to never put the cover on when the bike is still warm (would cause condensation) or wet (holds in the damp)

I have a bit of rust here and there on things such as gear linkage and one or two bolts. How much of this is down to being used in most weather or under cover I don't know.

Oxford Rainex here, quite decent.

A word of warning though, don't put a cover over a bike that's already wet. You'll only make things worse by trapping condensation.

I have an Oxford Stormex which in my opinion is an excellent cover.
Waterproof, breathable and has a fibre lining inside so it doesn't mark the bodywork underneath it.

My r&g cover fell apart after 6months, I was only taking it on and off a few times a month aswel, maybe i was unlucky and got a dodgy one.

Me and Mr Yaigi have each got one of these:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/OXFORD-STORMEX-MOTORCYCLE-WEATHER-COVER/dp/B000R593AG

They're really decent quality, have kept both bikes dry, and I reckon as far as covers go, are as good as it gets. Would still be much better off in a garage or shed (if only for the convenience alone!), but we don't have one, and they haven't feel to bits yet.

You can get some decent R&G Covers cheap from their Outlet store on ebay. This is the one I've got, found it pretty decent. Had it six months now, on/off every work day, still holding together fine, just a bit dirty. They're discounted apparently because they've got a slight crinkled finish, however I've found them fine. Clips to hold them on, holes front and back for locking it on (my first was pinched!) and had no issue putting it on straight after pulling up with hot exhaust. It's also got a soft bit inside to go over tank.

You big bunch of girls. It's a bike. No point it putting a cover over it. It's only rain, and it's only salt. Didn't even spray it in duck oil this year, and you know what, she's fine.

Covers can cause condensation. And they usually make a sail and your bike falls over.
