I made fish and chips, and onion rings, at home. Pommie food.

The batter came out very crispy and tasty, but didnt stick totally. still tasted nice though. all that grease is very filling Shocked

Not quite like making schnitzel. So what did I miss?

For the batter I used 1 cup flour, 1 tsp baking powder, some bicarb and salt, 1 tsp curry powder, 1 cup water and one egg. let stand a bit, dip fish in and fry at 150 C.

https://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/hvandermerwe62/IMG-20130308-00822_zps9b48ddc0.jpg

dipped the onion rings in the same batter.

I diluted the Brit grease assault with a salad Shocked

At least both kids have hockey tomorrow (the real one, not the one with knives under your feet), to work it off. I just must bike back and forth between 2 the 2 events.

Tomorrow we are going to a braai so back to a piece of red meat over coals, with all the fat drained out of it.

No I didn't. I do that with schnitzel. Before dipping in egg but that is a dry mix, not a liquid batter. Thx

Gotta flour the fish before dipping it in beer batter. Done properly it shouldn't be greasy or drippy at all. Oh, and you need bread and butter to go with a fish dinner like that Thumbs Up

tsk where is the deep fried lard?

Mechanically processed meats (sausages, kebab, burgers, pies which should also be fried)

And you did fry it in lard right?

If not much fail..

Thx. See I made 2 mistakes: not flouring the fish first and using water and baking powder instead of beer. Can't say it was greasy. The batter was crispy

But bread as well, and butter? That is a carb overload. A good meal for my daughter night before a provincial swim, as they can't eat meat night before and must load with carbs. But it would make my belly expand. With the fried chips and onion rings no way I could have forced bread down, I still want to be able to touch my toes!

The salad looks nice.

(believe me, this is a RARE thing for me to admit to Laughing )

Although, what fat did you use to fry that stuff?
It does look *very* greasy.

Hint: no self-respecting Pom puts curry in the batter Laughing

Most successful chip shops, in London at least, are run by Bubbles or Eye-ties.

Lettuce and tamaties come from my garden

Self respecting poms don't put in curry powder but claim chicken tikka masala is british Laughing

British food is made my indians and italians and bubbles? What is a bubble? Kicking myself for not knowing a racial term Laughing

Fried in SA sunflower oil. It was crispy not soggy and greasy

Self respecting curry chefs don't put curry powder in their tikka masala.

Bubble and squeak = Greek.

Another Brit dish perhaps! Not the Greek.

Edit - beaten to it (I was adding value).

It comes originally from Cockney* rhyming slang and has very little insulting racial overtone, so no point you trying to use it, Kradhouse, hahaha Mr. Green Thumbs Up

*I've been here FAR too long, LOL, I shouldn't even know Cockney rhyming slang, let alone use it in everyday language.

Although it took me literally YEARS to realise that when (in the film Snatch), Bricktop says "I'll cut your fucking Jacobs off" that he meant Jacobs Crackers/knackers Laughing

As said, flour the fish. The only other thing I can think of that's missing is a decent-sized gherkin.

Curse you, Kradders!

I was going to go for the "broccoli with crispy bacon and crumbled Stilton" option for dinner.

(that is : if I can hack the slime off the Stilton and get away with not poisoning myself ...) Rolling Eyes

... but now I *really* fancy some onion rings Drooling
