Nodding origins

I know there's a plethora of nodding threads but this is different. Reading about the Police Velocettes of the 60s on Wikipedia I found this, which is about where the term 'noddy bike' comes from -

It may have had some influence, but it's also like the much older tradition to touch or raise one's hat when passing someone you know in the street but perhaps do not have the time to engage in conversation.

It isn't purely a biking thing, round here on the single track roads most drivers (well the locals anyway) give a little acknowledgement as usually both have to slow and tuck in to pass each other.
This can be a discreet wave or nod which is quite similar.

It used to be common to wave or similar to another car of the same make as yours at the time when the AA was set up to warn of police presence near by. They would salute members vehicles (denoted by the radiator badge you got when you joined up) if there was no salute it meant the police were round the corner, slow down.

Is it true that we drive on the left side of the road as most people are right handed so back in the horse and cart days it made sense to be on the left as people drew there pistol with there right hand ?

Letting go of the bars of a LE is no different to letting go of the bars of any other bike, indeed when an officer wanted to turn or stop they would have to make a hand signal as the bikes had no indicator or brake light. "Noddy" refereed to the Enid Blyton character as you looked a plonker riding one. I had two, they were fun in a low speed way!

I've noticed that in Scotland bikers generally nod to each other a lot more than they Do down south. London as ever is full of dicks who are so busy being up their own arse to be bothered to acknowledge another human being let alone biker exists (dons crash helmet )

Although some days I do, some I don't, depends if I want to make their day or not, some days I do a Rimmer 10 second twirly salute, but you need to see them early for that one.

Austrian bikers are definitely the friendliest! Always gave me nice big affable waves, one guy even waved me to come up and join him as we waited for some lights and engaged me in (perfect English) conversation.

As for France, mostly in Brittany (I took the Plymouth-Roscoff ferry). I must admit, I wish we drove on the right over here. Waving feels so friendly and cheerful. Nodding feels a bit ominous, like we are determinately acknowledging each other's role as part of some dark and grimly necessary task or cult.

When it came to Italy, though...f*ck that place. Most car drivers drove straddling the white lines.

And as for Vespa/Piaggio riders the world over, f*ck you people. Accelerating as hard as soon as the light turns green. Trying to flick your little waspish machine in front of me. Think you can beat me? Bring it on you little bitch. Let's see how you look when you fall off in those skinny jeans and faggot jacket and your gay converse shoes.
